Russia: Coronavirus outbreak at Zenit St. Petersburg. The team does not continue in the cup preliminaries

1 min read

The coronavirus immediately messes up the plans for the new season in Russia.
In fact, the 3 first rounds of the preliminary phase of the Russian Cup began on Monday and today the news is that Io Zenit St. Petersburg has been excluded from the round robin they were playing in Moscow (then it was supposed to host the second round robin from 16 to September 20).
The team coached by Sammelvuo had presented itself without Kovalev, Iakovlev, Andreev and Melkozerov (and with Pashytskyy in the stands because the change of nationality has not yet been ratified) and in yesterday’s second match it had not even put Kliuka, Poletaev and Filippov on the scoresheet.
However, it was not enough to prevent the spread of the epidemic within the team. Of course, the Russian federation has recommended further tests for the formations engaged in Moscow.
Despite the ā€œdisqualificationā€ from the 2 preliminary tournaments, Zenit St. Petersburg should still be admitted to the semifinal phase.

For now, the matches will continue, but without Zenit, who played two matches prior to receiving the ban and lost to Fakel and Dinamo Moscow.
Speaking of todayā€™s matches of the 2020 Russian Cup, there were no surprises. After Day 3, three teams have a perfect record: Kuzbass in Zone 1, Dinamo Moscow in Zone 2, and Zenit-Kazan in Zone 3.
