2 min read

The teams of Argentina and Brazil opened the South American Championship in a victorious way in matches played at the Nilson Nelson Colosseum in Brasilia. Argentina beat Colombia 3-0 (25:20, 25:19, 25:17), and host Brazil defeated Peru in straight sets too, 3-0 (25:12, 25:19, 25:18).

In the first South American match, Argentina made debut with a 3-0 victory over Colombia led by AgustĆn Loser, who was the top scorer of the match with 16 points, while Andres Felipe Piza Hernandez scored 8 points for Colombia.

On the other match, Peru came out on the field after 19 months without an official or friendly match and could not avoid a clear defeat in straight sets (12:25, 19:25, 18:25) against the hosts Brazil, winners of 33 South American championship titles. Alan Souza was the top scorer of the match with 13 points, followed by Gabriel Vaccari Kavalkievicz who also contributed with 10. For Peru, Daniel UrueƱa was the top scorer with only 6 points.

Recall that, due to the withdrawal of Venezuela from the competition (situation with COVID-19), a new system and schedule of matches for the competition has been determined: now it is played in a single round-robin format, with each team plays with every other team once.
In the previous format, it was planned that the tournament would be played in two pools, and the two best teams from each group would advance to the semifinals.
