🎃 Italy: Cisterna stun Verona, Trento sweep Lube in big match of Round 3, Padova and Monza ok.

4 min read

Round 3 of 2021/22 SuperLega Credem Banca ended yesterday, on Halloween Sunday.

In first match scheduled, Top Volley Cisterna surprisingly defeats Verona Volley on the road. Despite new outside-hitter Nathan Wounembaina, and Mozic’s 29 points, nothing to do for the hosts, who remain at the bottom of the charts. On the other hand, this was Cisterna’s first victory this season.

The day continue with second win for Kioene Padova, 3-2 over Consar Ravenna, on their home court. Led by German opposite Linus Weber, 23 points (49% in attack, 3 aces and 1 winning block and MVP award) the hosts manage to win a match with several up and down in both sides, but with a solid performance in blocking, with 13 winning blocks, above all from their middle-blockers: 6 by Marco Vitelli, and 4 by Andrea Canella. One precious point also for Ravenna who, however, lose Milan Peslac due an injury.

In bog match of the day, Itas Trentino take advantage of numerous injuries in Cucine Lube Civitanova, which suffer third straight defeat in competition, including the one in the Super Cup semi-final against Vero Volley Monza.
On the other hand, Trentino earned another three points to keep the perfect record after three rounds to enjoy solitude at the top of the standings.
Not a good moment for Civitanova, because the injured Ivan Zaytsev was joined by Osmany Juantorena and Jiří Kovář, and head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini was forced to make a painful choice, practically leaving setter Luciano De Cecco on the bench for most of the match, to put Daniele Sottile on the court to have the right amount of Italians on the court.
And thus the rivals dominated two of a total of four sets, with a curious balance among Trentino’s scorers: all five players that put their names on the scoresheet reached double digits, a fact that really does not happen often!
Among them, Alessandro Michieletto was the best with 21 points, while Bulgarian Matey Kaziyski served four aces, and Serbian Srećko Lisinac set up five winning blocks.

On the evening match, Vero Volley Monza keep showing their great form after their great performance at the Italian Super Cup in which they lost at the final against Trentino, and easily beat newcomers Gioiella Prisma Taranto on their home soil.
It was clear that the hosts wanted to keep up the positive start of the season so far, beating 3-1 Modena at home and then losing on the derby against Milan in a very balanced match that ended 2-3.
For Taranto, on the other hand, could be second victory of the season, aftet 1-3 defeat on the first round against Vibo Valentia, and a straight sets win against Ravenna.
About the match, Monza dominate the first set easily, with an unstoppable Grozer that scored 9 points and a 61% efficiency in attack! 25-18 is the final score.
The second set was a different story, with the hosts who struggled to attack. Monza’s head coach Eccheli made a change to help raise Monza’s block and put the teams’ captain Thomas Beretta on the court, who scored a great block right after entering the field. The rivals made some errors and struggled above all on reception, allowing Monza’s reaction. Grozer maintained the high level with an amazing 83% attacking efficiency, while Dzavoronok went to serve scored an ace that gave the home team the advantage, and later the set, ended 25-23.
In the last set great team performance fot the hosts, especially in blocking, and coach Di Pinto was forced to make some changes, putting on the field Palonsky, Gironi and Stefani to try to catch Monza, who was too strong and closed the set 25-18, to gain their 2 victories of this season in straight sets!
