3 min read

What a spectacular start of 2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship! Brazil reacts to 0-2 and surpasses Cuba in tie-break in an intense game that raised the curtain on the competition to beat Cuba in Pool B in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Under the pressure of the opening match, which is never easy at any major event, Brazil used an old weapon, Wallace Souza, to avoid the fall. Cuba, in fact, open 2-0 in sets but sought and accomplished the turnaround. On his return to the team, the experienced opposite was a fundamental element for the victory of 3-2, partially 31:33, 21:25, 25:16, 25:17, and 18:16, and ended the match as top scorer with 23 points.
Brazil immediately went ahead 15-8 before undergoing a great comeback from the rivals who, on the momentum from the first set, won the second as well. The tie-break was a great volleyball show: Brazil went 11-8 ahead, but Cuba leveled and even had the match point. Ultimately, the victory of Brazil came following Yoandy Leal’s attack: 18-16 in the fifth set. Recovered Lucas Saatkamp ‘Lucão’ and Flávio Gualberto made 4 blocks each among the winners, while Jesús Herrera scored 18 points for Cuba and Liván Osoria made 4 blocks.

Also in Pool B, Japan beat Qatar in straight sets without lot of problems and started off the World Champs in a promising manner. Partially it was 25:20, 25:18 and 25:15.
From the first set, Yuji Nishida (scored match-high 17 points; 4 blocks), Ran Takahashi (71.43% attack; 10/14) and their teammates took the initiative in all elements and earned the whole 3 points.

Standings (updated on this day) of Pool B
Japan 3
Brazil 2
Cuba 1
Qatar 0

The day continued with other two matches, valid for Pool D. In first one, France defeat a combative Germany 3-0 (25:22, 28:26, 26:24).

Germany fails to beat France, who didn’t disappoint its fans, in an official match even after 8 years, more precisely since the match for third place in the World Championship 2014!
If France confirmed their great shape, Germany, being aware they play against the defending Olympic champions and having nothing to lose, caused bigger damage than expected to France, with the role of the main weapon embodied in Moritz Karlitzek, who ended the game as top scorer with 17 points. Earvin Ngapeth scored 15 points for France, forcing rivals to fail to receive his serves 4 times.

Also Slovenia, for whom this is the second World Championship appearance, opened their campaign with an easy rivals Cameroon.
The African runners-up proved to be an unfavorable opponent at times, but they had no real chance against the favorite co-hosts: 3-0 (25:19, 25:23, 25:21)
Tonček Štern top-scored the winners with 18 points, including 5 aces, while Arthur Voukeng scored 11 points for Cameroon.

Standings (updated on this day) of Pool D
France 3
Slovenia 3
Germany 0
Cameroon 0
