WCH 2022: Slovenia first quarterfinalist! Germany defeated in four sets!

2 min read

Round of 16, knockout Stage of 2022 FIVB World Championship, started today in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with first two matches!
The name of the first quarter-finalist is known, and itā€™s one of the co-hosts.

In the first Round of 16 match at their countryā€™s capital of Ljubljana, the European vice-champions defeated Germany for the second time this week (these two closed the group stage) to secure the first Top-8 berth.
On their captain Tine Urnautā€™s 34th birthday (he opened the second set with an ace, in addition to 11 attacks he made during the match at a success rate of 55%, including that clever back-row tip to draw the score level at 11-11 in the third set after Germany started with a five-point lead), the home team celebrated a 3-1 (25:18, 25:19, 21:25, 25:22) triumph and a historic first qualification among the worldā€™s best eight teams, led also by a super sold-out of Arena Stožice. In quarterfinals, on September 7, they will face the winners between Netherlands and Ukraine.

A one-sided match in first two sets in which Germany never entered the game, also thanks to Slovenian’s spikers Stern (16), Cebulj (top scorer of the match with 19 points) and Urnaut (12), as well as victim of lot of errors, 36, at the end of the Game, against only 26 for the Slovenians.
Germany start the game with Linus Weber opposite (he ended the match with 17 points) and Karlitzek (14 points) outside-hitter, while for the hosts the setter is Vincic.
After first two sets without lot of problems, in third Germany take the lead 21-19. Thus Cretu puts in the field Ropret instead of Vincic, but the hosts made lot of errors and they wasn’t able to change the fate of the set.
In fourth set Ropret is confirmed as setter. Slovenia fly until 14-10, 16-11 and even 18-12, but the rivals make a desperate attempt to reopen the set until a dangerous 21-19. However, eventualy, are their own errors to give the set to Slovenia, including an invasion by middle blocker Krick, who ended the game with 13 points and 5 winning blocks.

The Slovenian team is competing in its second World Champs, finishing their maiden appearance four years ago in 12th place.

In second match of the day, Italy beats Cuba with the same result, and will face the winners between France and Japan in quarterfinals.
