In an exciting final action of the Mevza League, hosted by Kamnik, the home team Calcit Volley and the defending champions, ACH Volley Ljubljana, competed today in the all-Slovenian final.
After losing the opening set, titleholders won the next three sets and deservedly enjoyed their 14th title in the competition – 1-3 (25:23, 18:25, 22:25, 23:25).
In the first set, the hosts started absolutely better and took a three points lead with the winning block of 12-9. Ljubljana react, but the hosts escape again after their break, putting down the ball of 15-11. With a great attack, Gjorgiev managed to reduce the gap to two points, 15-13, but the home side responded by escaping again, 19-14.
Koncilija put down the ace of 22-22, but it wasn’t enough to turn things around and, in a thrilling final, Pavlovič close at the first set ball with a block to give Kamnik a 1-0 lead in the sets, 23-25.
ACH Volley had a strong start in the second set, and Kök put down the ball of 8-3. The Slovenian champions maintained their advantage and did not let the home team get closer than three points, 15-12, that is the better result in this set. The team from country’s capital close in fact the set with a clear 18-25, thanks to an error by Sosa Sierra (who will end the game as top scorer with 25 points and an impressive 71% in attack).
The first half of third set none of the two teams managed to gain a significant lead, and it was played on a very al high level.
Ljubljana managed to escape from the rivals only on 17-20 and then 19-22, and keep the lead until the end of the set, which was closed by the 34-year-old Macedonian captain Nikola Gjorgiev with a powerful attack, 22-25). He ended the game as top
scorer on the winning side, scoring 24 points, all in attack, through 62% efficiency.
Similar to the third set, also the fourth was very balanced, but in the second half the players of ACH Volley managed to escape 16-19. Calcit don’t give up in this thrilling final, and put down the ball of 23-21, however, after 28 minutes of play, Ljubljana managed to close set and game, and celebrated a well-deserved title (in fact, they ended 2022/23 Mevza League undefeated!
