In an exciting quarterfinal showdown at the Paris 2024 Olympic Game, France staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Germany 3-2 in the men’s volleyball tournament, and they did it after losing the first two sets, 18:25 and 26:28.
However, they rallied to win the final three sets (25:20, 25:21, 15:13), in front of more than 10,000 fans cheering them on at South Paris Arena 1.
The match was marked by controversy when a red card was issued to a German player during the crucial tie-breaker, sparking heated debates.
Despite the dramatic end, Germany’s Georg Grozer led the game with 22 points, but it was France’s Earvin Ngapeth and Trévor Clévenot who stole the spotlight with 21 and 20 points, respect, leading France to victory.
With this win, France advances to the semifinals where they will face Italy, who also completed a comeback earlier in the day against Japan. Poland, having defeated Slovenia 3-1, has also secured a semifinal spot.
In last quarterfinal match, the United States defeated Brazil in straight sets to advance to the semifinals too.
The winners, who missed the medal rounds in Tokyo, showcased their strength with a great 3-1 victory (26:24, 28:30, 25:19, 25:19) to face Poland in the semifinals on Wednesday, aiming for a place in the gold medal match.
Matt Anderson led USA with 19 points, well supported by TJ Defalco with 16, Max Holt, who added 13, and Aaron Russell with 11.
For Brazil, Alan Souza scored 16 points coming off the bench, with Ricardo Lucarelli adding 15.
The victory marks the USA’s return to the Olympic semifinals, and this will be their seventh semifinal appearance in 13 Olympic tournaments, having won medals in five of those.
