Austria: 2024/25 season starts today! Only home wins in Round 1

2024/25 Powerfusion Volley League started today with all 5 scheduled games.
Defending Champions and Supercup winners HYPO TIROL volleyball team lived up to their role as favorite celebrating a clear 3-0 (25:21, 25:13, 25:17) home win against VBK Kelag WĂśrther-See-LĂśwen Klagenfurt on Saturday evening, with head coach Lorenzo Tubertini who send to the court players who had not played as protagonists in recent Champions League qualifiers games including setter Adam Provaznik, middle blocker Kyle Paulson and outside attacker Michael Ladner.
Last season runners-up TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg struggled more than expected but, eventually, after losing first set, defeated newcomers Sportunion z+p St. PĂślten without major problems with the score of 3-1 (22:25, 25:13, 25:17, 25:14).
Tobias Willimek scored 19 points, while Dorde Knezevic added 14. Top scorer on the losing side was Georg KĂśstler with 13 points.
UVC Holding Graz needed five sets to defeat TJ Sokol V/Post SV Wien, 3-2 (16:25, 25:20, 20:25, 25:15, 15:13).
After two hours, of intense play, a service error by Sokol’s Aaron Reiss ended the match. Nils Arvay, Arwin Kopschar (17 each) and Johannes Kratz (16) led the the charge for Graz, while top scorer of the match was Sokol’s Jakub Kocvara with 21 points, while teammate Tobias Ofner added 16 points.
UVC McDonald’s Ried prevailed against VCA Amstetten NÖ 3-0 (28:26, 25:20, 25:22) in their Raiffeisen Volleydome while, in the last game of the first round, ÖVV Cup winner SK Zadruga Aich/Dob won against Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel in a tie-break (25:20, 24:26, 25:21, 25:27, 15:7) in an Austrian classic.
These two already faced each other in the bronze medal series at the end of last season. The Carinthians prevailed then, and they also won the duel on Saturday evening. However, for head coach Lucio Oro’s players wasn’t easy as they were already leading 24:21 in the fourth set, but eventually they prevailed in decisive fifth set. Top scorers of the match were Carlos Charles-Santana (26) and Bryan Camino Martinez (24) for the winners, and Paul Nusterer (24) and Krzysztof Gulak (15) for Waldviertel.
