After VK Lvi Praha from Czech Republic, Estonia’s Selver x Taltech Tallinn and Sport Lisboa e Benfica from Portugal, who claimed their tickets for 8th Finals yesterday, several other teams celebrated their promotion today, mostly without major upsets, like Polish powerhouse Asseco Resovia Rzeszow who literally destroyed Orion Stars Doetinchem from The Netherlands, 3-0 (25:15, 25:11, 25:17) after just 65 minutes of play. In a game in which the winners boasted 12 winning blocks and 11 aces, Bartosz Bednorz left the court as top scorer with 17 points through 65% in attack and 4 winning blocks, while Stephen Boyer and Klemen Cebulj also contributed with 4 aces each.
Predictions respected also in Turkey, more precisely at TVF Ziraat Bankkart Volleyball Hall Ankara / A, where the hosts Ziraat Bank Ankara easily beat VaLePa Sastamala from Finland 3-0 (25:20, 25:21, 25:17) too, with 7 aces and 18 points from Trevor Clevenot and Tonček Stern, and in Italy, where superfavorites Trentino Itas trampled over Romania’s C.S. Arcada Galati with the same result, 3-0 (25:17, 25:20, 25:16). The hosts did their homework in first two sets, and then also in third one, despite almost all backup players on the court, including youngsters Alessandro Acquarone, Alessandro Bristot and Marco Pellacani. MVP Giulio Magalini left the court as top scorer with 17 points through 65% in attack, 1 ace and 1 block.

Another straight sets win also for
Spain’s Guaguas Las Palmas, who eliminated Austria’s TSV Raiffeisen Hartberg after 74 minutes and with set scores of 16:25, 23:25 and 18:25.
After a four sets home win in first leg, Romania’s CSM Corona Brasov repeated themselves with a 0-3 (22:25, 17:25, 22:25) commanding win in Serbia, on the field of most-quoted Vojvodina Novi Sad to progress to the next stage of competition, while Switzerland’s Volley Amriswil eliminated another team from Serbia, Crvena Zvezda Beograd, despite a 2-3 (27:29, 25:20, 24:26, 25:16, 14:16) home defeat, useless, after the great 0-3 of first leg. In a hard-fought clash lasted as many as 138 minutes, to make the difference the hosts’ impressive performance in blocking, with 19 points from this element compared to the rivals’ 10.
Unfortunately for the Suisse volleyball, however, another team had to say goodbye to CEV Cup.
After a 1-3 heavy home defeat in first leg, Lausanne UC also succumbed 3-2 (25:22, 23:25, 19:25, 25:21, 15:11) on the field of The Netherlands’ Draisma Dynamo Apeldoorn, while Croatia’s Mladost Zagreb, after stunning Germany’s VfB Friedrichshafen in first leg, winning the game in four sets, surrendered to VfB Friedrichshafen losing the game 3-2 (21:25, 23:25, 25:13, 25:20, 15:9) too, but this was enough to progress to 8th finals.
Again about Switzerland, also third team in competition has been eliminated, and this happened in France, at Salle Robert Grenon, where Tours VB defeated Volley Schönenwerd by 3-1 (25:21, 24:26, 25:15, 25:17), with 21 points from Hermans Egleskalns (51% in attack and 2 aces).
Promotion also for Greece’s AONS Milon Athens, who today down SK Jēkabpils Lūši from Latvia 3-2 (25:22, 25:27, 25:20, 19:25, 16:14), while the other two sides qualified earned their tickets thanks to Golden Set.
After suffering a 3-1 defeat in Cyprus in first leg, Bulgaria’s Deya Volley Burgas redeemed themselves with a clear 3-0 (25:15, 25:18, 25:19) home win over Omonia Nicosia, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting side were able to win decisive Golden Set with the score of 12-15, led by Theo Lopes and Fernando Dos Reis, top scorers with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Something similar happened at Pafiakos Pafos, who won 3-1 at home in Cyprus over most quoted Lindemans Aalst from Belgium. However, tonight, they suffered a 3-0 (25:18, 25:10, 30:28) defeat, even though they claimed Golden Set with a clean 10-15, with 26 points from top scorer Nikolaos Eleftheriou, all in attack, through 59%.
Tomorrow Turkey’s Galatasaray HDI Istanbul will welcome Fino Kaposvar from Hungary, after a thrilling 2-3 in favor of Galatasaray of first leg…
