Champions League: winning debut for Zawiercie, Lüneburg, Ziraat, Galatasaray, Perugia and Warszawa

2025/26 CEV Champions League continued today with other six games.

In Pool A, Ziraat Bankkart opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-1 (25:21, 21:25, 25:19, 25:21) win over French Champions Tours.
Backed by a loud home crowd, the Turkish champions controlled decisive moments of the game with strong blocking and consistent serving. Nimir Abdel-Aziz led the winners with 18 points and was named MVP.

It’s always great to start the Champions League with a win,” he said. “We’re not at our best yet, but we reached our goal.”

In Pool B, Türkiye Galatasaray HDI Istanbul opened their campaign with a thrilling five-set win over Belgium’s Knack Roeselare, celebrating a 3-2 (25:18, 19:25, 21:25, 25:23, 15:13) victory after more than two hours of back-and-forth match.
The hosts controlled the first set, but Roeselare responded by taking the next two behind strong serving from Basil Dermaux and and efficient performance in attack from Erik Siksna. The hosts regrouped in the fourth, capitalizing on the rivals’ errors before middle blocker Ahmet Tümer sealed the set with a block to force a tie-break.
In decisive fifth set, Galatasaray moving ahead 12–9 and Roeselare managed to tie it at 13–13. Tümer again made the difference, scoring the final two points to take a 15–13 win.
Canada’s Stephen Maar earned MVP honors after leading all scorers with 26 points, including three aces, while Dermaux led Roeselare with 24 points and six aces.

In Pool C, defending champions Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia redeemed themselves from an opening-set loss to defeat VK Lvi Praha from Czech Republic 3-1 (24:26, 25:18, 25:18, 25:19) on Champions League debut. VK Lvi Praha claimed the first set 26–24 behind David Kollátor’s 20 points, but the home team settled in and controlled the rest of the match, led by Kamil Semeniuk, top scorer with 18 points, and a also thanks to a commanding performance in blocking (12 to 7).

Poland’s Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie and Germany’s SVG Lüneburg opened their CEV Champions League campaigns with strong performances on their home soil, each securing 3–1 victories to begin Pool D in a perfect way.
Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat domestic rivals Asseco Resovia Rzeszów 3–1 (32:34, 25:22, 25:16, 25:20) in a thrilling Polish derby at Arena Sosnowiec.
Resovia played a great opening set, surviving seven Zawiercie set points before Klemen Cebulj’s ace delivered the 34–32 win. But the hosts quickly regrouped and, led by an outstanding performance from opposite Bartłomiej Bołądź, awarded MVP and author of 25 points, tightened their attack and block to take full control of the match. Bartosz Kwolek added 17 to the winners’ tally, while Resovia’s top scorer, Karol Butryn, scored a remarkable 27-point effort, but his team could not maintain the early rhytm as the rivals dominated the third and fourth sets with improved serving and attack.
In second Pool D contest, SVG Lüneburg defeated Champions League newcomers Sporting CP Lisboa from Portugal 3–1 (25:18, 25:19, 23:25, 25:23) in front of an excited LKH Arena crowd.
Outside hitter Daniel Gruvaeus set the tone early, scoring 7 points only in the first set and keeping his good play throughout the match, well supported by Axel Lund and Ethan Champlin.
Sporting fought back with renewed intensity in the third set, led by Edson Valencia Gonzalez, who matched Gruvaeus with 20 points overall. The visitors claimed the set 25–23 to extend the match, but the German side regrouped in the fourth, closing the match.

In Warsaw, polish powerhouse PGE Projekt Warszawa opened Pool E with a 3-0 (25:17, 25:17, 25:20) win over Belgium’s Haasrode Leuven, dominating at the net with a 15–3 blocking margin, led by MVP Yurii Semeniuk, who recorded six blocks and 12 points.
