And yes, this is probably the most historically important entry of the day.
On this day, August 26, 1946, during a friendly match between Czechoslovakia and France at Sokol Vinohrady, Prague, representatives of the volleyball federations of Czechoslovakia, France and Poland met to discuss the creation of an international governing body.
The meeting produced the first official document outlining the future International Volleyball Federation, including plans for a constituent congress and for the creation of a European or World Championship.
The FIVB itself would officially be founded in Paris the following year, in 1947!
On August 26, 2004, Brazil’s Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego completed their Olympic triumph in Athens, defeating Spain’s Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera 21–16, 21–15 in the men’s beach volleyball final.
The victory gave Brazil the gold medal, while Spain took silver and Switzerland’s Stefan Kobel and Patrick Heuscher claimed bronze.
It was a particularly significant moment for Emanuel, who would go on to become one of the defining figures in the history of beach volleyball.
Rachel Beliveau, Canadian indoor volleyball player who represented Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where the team finished eighth is born on August 26, 1961.
Laura Bruschini, one of Italy’s early beach-volleyball pioneers, is born om August 26, 1966. She represented Italy at the 2000 Sydney Olympics with Annamaria Solazzi and won three European titles, in 1997, 1999 and 2000.
Today also Russian middle blocker and 2012 Olympic champion Nikolay Apalikov, born August 26, 1982, celebrates his birthday! He was also European champion with Russia in 2013.
And happy birthday to Julian Zenger too (August 26, 1997), german libero, European Championship silver medallist in 2017 and CEV Champions League winner with Itas Trentino in 2022!
On August 26, 2017 Czechoslovak legend Josef Musil died in Prague, aged 85.
He was one of the giants of the pre-modern era of men’s volleyball. He won two Olympic medals — silver at Tokyo 1964 and bronze at Mexico City 1968 — as well as five World Championship medals, including gold in 1956 and 1966. He also won three European Championship medals, including European titles in 1955 and 1957.
In other words, he wasn’t simply an Olympic medallist: he was one of the central figures of the golden generation of Czechoslovak volleyball.

Dominican Republic takes down Guatemala 3-0 (25:20, 25:17, 25:17) in its first win in Ponce NORCECA Final Six with 18 points from match top scorer Alexis Cruz. Dominican Republic improves to 1-2 and Guatemala suffers its third loss.
USA battles back from two sets down to defeat Canada 3-2 (17:25, 22:25, 25:21, 25:19, 15:11), with 17 points from Jacop Pasteur. Daniil Hershtynovich top-scored the losing side with 25 points, but he wasn’t enough. USA remains undefeated at 3-0, while Canada drops to 1-2.
Close the picture Mexico, who bounced back to beat Puerto Rico 3-1 (17:25, 25:17, 25:21, 25:22).
Klistan Lawrence and Pedro Molina led the winners with 14 points each, closely followed by Ismael Alomar who added 13, like Yasutaka Sanay for Mexico.
Both sides now hold a 2-1 record.
