South Korea completed a remarkable comeback in Fukuoka, overcoming Australia 3–2 (16:25, 25:18, 22:25, 25:18, 15:9) to claim the bronze medal at 2026 AVC Men’s Volleyball Asian Championship to secure their place at the 2027 World Championship in Poland.
Australia twice took the lead in the match for third place, winning the opening set 25–16 before Korea levelled the contest with a 25–18 response.
The Australians regained the advantage in the third set, edging it 25–22, but Korea refused to give in and once again drew level at 2–2 after taking the fourth set 25–18.
The decisive tie-break then belonged all to Korea and, with the bronze medal and the final Asian qualification spot for the 2027 World Championship both at stake, the Koreans took control and closed out the match 15–9.
The statistics underline how Korea turned the match around: Australia had the edge at the net with 13 blocks to Korea’s eight, while both teams produced four aces.
Korea, however, proved far more effective in attack, scoring 66 points in that category compared with Australia’s 52.
That attacking difference ultimately proved decisive, with Korea finishing the match with 103 total points to Australia’s 95.
Subong Ho was the man of the match, leading Korea to victory with 28 points. Sungjin Lim added 15, while Australia were led again by Lorenzo Pope with 23 points and William D’Arcy with 14.
The result gives Korea a place on the Asian Championship podium and, more importantly, confirms their qualification for the 2027 World Championship in Poland.
After twice trailing Australia, they produced their strongest volleyball when the stakes were highest, turning the bronze-medal match into a decisive final step towards the next global stage.
