Some volleyball matches are remembered for their quality, others for their tension.
Every so often, a game produces a moment so improbable that the final score barely tells the story. That was the case in Greece, where Moschato completed a sensational comeback against Irida Nea Smyrni in the quarter-finals of the ESPEDA Women’s Cup, overturning a 4–13 deficit in the deciding tie-break to win 15–13.

With the home side just two points away from victory, Moschato appeared to have run out of time. Instead, the visitors produced an extraordinary sequence of eleven consecutive points, winning every remaining rally and turning a seemingly hopeless situation into a place in the last four.
The match had already delivered plenty of drama before reaching its extraordinary conclusion. Moschato took the opening set 25–17, but Irida responded by winning two closely contested sets, 27–25 and 26–24, to move ahead 2–1. Facing elimination, the visitors fought back again, claiming the fourth set 25–22 to force a tie-break.
The decisive set then seemed to be heading firmly in Irida’s favour. At 13–4, the hosts needed only two more points to finish the match. In volleyball, a nine-point lead in a tie-break is an enormous advantage: the first team to reach 15 points, provided it leads by at least two, wins. Irida was therefore within touching distance of qualification, while Moschato had virtually no margin for error.
What followed was the defining sequence of the contest. Moschato won point after point, closing the gap without allowing Irida to score again. The run continued all the way to 15–13, completing an 11–0 finish that sealed a 3–2 victory, with the full match score standing at 25:17, 25:27, 24:26, 25:22, 15:13.

The significance of the comeback lies not simply in the number of consecutive points, but in the pressure under which they were won. At 13–4, Irida was two points from the finish line; Moschato needed to produce an almost perfect sequence while knowing that a single lost rally would bring its opponents even closer to victory. The visitors ultimately won eleven rallies in a row, while the home team could not find the point that would end the match.
For coach Artemis Halvadji and her players, the reward was a place in the semi-finals of the regional competition. For Irida, the defeat meant seeing a seemingly secure qualification disappear in the closing moments of a match that had swung back and forth throughout.
The episode is also a reminder of one of volleyball’s most compelling characteristics: a lead can create a strong advantage, but it never guarantees the outcome. Unlike sports in which the clock can run down, volleyball gives the trailing team another opportunity with every rally. As long as the match is not over, the next point remains available—and occasionally, a team manages to win every single one it needs.
Moschato’s eleven-point streak turned a quarter-final into an unforgettable sporting story. At 4–13, the end seemed inevitable. At 15–13, the impossible had become reality!
