French volleyball is mourning the loss of Christian Albe, vice-president of the French Volleyball Federation (FFvolley), who passed away at the age of 79 following a brief battle with illness. His death came on a particularly symbolic day, as the French volleyball family had gathered to celebrate the federationās 90th anniversary.
The loss of one of the sportās most respected figures has left a profound sense of sadness throughout the French volleyball community.
His commitment to volleyball spanned several decades, beginning with his own playing days in sports halls and on the beaches of Palavas-les-Flots and Carnon. After years spent on the court, he continued to dedicate his life to the game through administration, contributing to its development at every level.
He was first involved in the creation of Lattes VB, before taking on responsibilities within the HƩrault Departmental Committee and the Languedoc-Roussillon Regional League. He served as treasurer in both organisations, a role that naturally suited his professional background as a chartered accountant.
In 2014, he became president of the regional league, which merged in 2016 to form the Occitanie League. He remained at its helm until 2024, continuing thereafter to support president Jean-Pierre Tosi as treasurer, a position he held until his passing.
His contribution to the French Volleyball Federation was equally significant.
In 1999, he became president of its financial committee, before serving as federation treasurer from 2000 to 2008 under presidents Jacques Shaw and Gil Pellan. In 2010, he ran for the FFvolley presidency against Patrick Kurtz. Although unsuccessful, he remained actively involved in the federationās financial affairs.
Following Ćric Tanguyās election in 2015, he returned to the role of treasurer, which he held until the end of 2024. At the federationās most recent election, he was appointed vice-president, a position he continued to occupy until his death.
Beyond his regional and national responsibilities, Christian Albe also devoted nearly 20 years to ASBAM, serving as president of one of Franceās largest volleyball development clubs, with more than 800 registered members. His commitment extended well beyond institutional duties: he remained deeply involved in the everyday work of helping young players discover, learn and share his passion for volleyball.
Christian Albe leaves behind a legacy built on dedication, expertise and an unwavering commitment to the sport. His work helped strengthen French volleyball across generations, from grassroots development to the highest levels of federation administration. On a day meant to celebrate 90 years of French volleyball, the community instead found itself saying goodbye to a man who had spent so much of his life helping shape its history.
