Without Lucarelli, who gets injured during warm-up, Brazil downs Iran without major problems to take last ticket avaible for quarter-finals.
Brazil beat Iran in the 1/8 finals of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship and will take on arch-rivals Argentina in the next stage in Gliwice, Poland, winning the match by 3 sets to 0 (25:17, 25:22, 25:23). Earlier on Tuesday, Argentina shut out Serbia to claim their ticket to the quarterfinals.
This way, all first-round clashes in the eliminations are over.
However, after the warm-up today, Brazil head coach Renan Dal Zotto knew he couldnât count on Ricardo Lucarelli as the starting outside hitter felt pain in his right calf in Mondayâs training.
The exam didnât show any injuries, and the Olympic champion even went to the court to start preparing for the game. But, feeling the pains once more, he ended up sidelined. Lucarelli gave way to Rodrigo LeĂŁo âRodriguinhoâ, and Brazil didnât seem to feel the absence of one of its stars.
The South American powerhouse practically didnât suffer any scares against these rivals, and they were only behind on the scoreboard at times in the third set but remained anchored to the score.
After Iran had regained control temporarily with an ace by opposite Saber Kazemi for 23-22, it was Leal who brought in the 24-23 match point with his only kill block in the game. A match point that was immediately converted to victory with a perfectly placed ace by setter and captain Bruno Rezende, who had just come in as a substitution. His serve was initially called out by the referees, but Brazil challenged the decision and the ball was clearly in.
Yoandy Leal stood alone with double digits on Brazilâs scoresheet and not only: 20 points for him at a 63% success rate.
Iran had no one with double digits.
Brazil outspiked Iran with 41 attacking points against only 32 for the rivals, and thatâs what made the biggest difference in the game.
