WCH 2022: USA, what a risk! Türkiye defeated at tie break to go to quarterfinals!

The United States was pushed to extreme limits by Turkey in the first match of the day of Round of 16 of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship in Poland and Slovenia.
Turkey was really close to upsetting the super favorite USA and going one step further from its already historic result in the global event, which is qualifying for the eliminations.
In Gliwice, Poland, in their historical debut in the knockout stage, Nedim Özbey’s guys came back from two sets of disadvantage and held the match in a precarious balance until 12-12 of the tie break before giving up.
The match seemed very close to be a straight-set win for USA, especially after setter and captain Micah Christenson made a successful swing for a 3-1 lead in the second set, but at that moment the rivals started to build a huge comeback that helped them push the match to five and keep up the fight through 12-12 in the tie-break, after which the Americans finally finished it off with three points in a row.
David Smith stepped up as the savior of John Speraw’s side: the expert middle blocker, in fact, was almost perfect in attack (72.22%, 14/18), scoring his team’s high 17 points. He put down also two kills in a row to extend USA’s lead to 17-13 in the first set and then produced the set winner, while opposite Matthew Anderson also contributed with 15 points, including an ace for 3-1 in the tie-break and two winning blocks.
Adis Lagumdžija was once again the man of the match on the other side, putting down an impressive amount of 31 points. He spiked at a 50% success rate, and added two winning blocks.
In second match of the day, all easy for hosts Poland, who destroy Tunisia in straight sets without lot of problems.
