Karol Butryn has reached a milestone reserved for the very best scorers in Polish volleyball. The 33-year-old Asseco Resovia Rzeszów opposite has become only the fourth player in the history of the country’s top division to surpass 5,000 points, placing himself alongside three of the most recognisable names of the modern era!

The historic moment came during Resovia’s 3–1 home victory over Energa Trefl Gdańsk in the third round of the Polish PlusLiga. With the hosts trailing 21–24 in the opening set, Butryn finished an attack to bring his personal career total in the elite championship to exactly 5,000 points. It was a particularly fitting way to reach the landmark: a decisive contribution in front of his home supporters, even though Resovia eventually lost that first set 22–25.
The names above him in the all-time rankings underline the significance of the achievement. Mariusz Wlazły remains the competition’s leading scorer with 7,624 points, followed by Dawid Konarski on 5,611 and Jakub Jarosz on 5,349.
Butryn now occupies fourth place, and unlike the three players ahead of him, he is still adding to his total in the current season.

What makes his achievement even more remarkable is the number of matches required to get there. Before the game against Gdańsk, Butryn had scored 4,995 points in 311 appearances. Wlazły needed 508 matches to reach his total, Konarski 408 and Jarosz 389. Butryn has therefore reached the 5,000-point threshold in considerably fewer appearances than any of the other members of this exclusive group, highlighting the extraordinary consistency of his scoring output.
His contribution against Gdańsk was another example of that reliability. Butryn finished with 18 points, including 16 in attack and two aces, becoming Resovia’s leading scorer. His serve also provided one of the highlights of the evening: a delivery clocked at 115 km/h earned him recognition for the most impressive serve of the match.
Power from the service line has long been one of his trademarks.
During the 2023/24 season, he recorded 80 aces, setting a single-season record in the Polish championship. That combination of attacking efficiency and serving pressure has helped establish him as one of the most productive opposite hitters of his generation in Poland.
The team result made the occasion even sweeter for Resovia. After losing the opening set, the home side gradually took control, winning the next three 25–20, 25–20 and 25–14. Klemen Čebuli contributed 17 points and received the match’s Most Valuable Player award, while Butryn provided the scoring leadership and the evening’s historic moment.

There is, however, another dimension to Butryn’s story.
Despite his remarkable club record, he is no longer part of Poland’s national-team plans. After being left out of Nikola Grbić’s selection in 2025, the opposite announced that he did not intend to represent the national team again.
It is a striking contrast: while his international chapter appears to have come to an end, his domestic career continues to produce milestones.
For now, the 5,000-point mark places Butryn in a very select group, alongside Wlazły, Konarski and Jarosz. Yet the numbers suggest that his story in the Polish championship is far from finished. He has reached a historic landmark faster than any of the three players ahead of him, and with every match he has the opportunity to climb further up a ranking that defines the country’s greatest scorers.
