After yesterday advance, in which Saint Nazaire easily defeated Toulouse, Round 9 of 2023/24 Marmara Spike League has been completed today with the other six games.
Despite a thrilling match on the field of Sète, Nantes Rezé earned two points and managed to stay to the top of the current standings, closing the game after a nail-biting 2-3 (27:25, 24:26, 25:23, 35:33, 21:25, 10:15) and after as many as 2 hours and 47 minutes of play!
Top scorer of the match the opposite of Sète, Celestin Cardin, author of an impressive 33 points with 4 aces, 2 blocks and 40% in attack with 4 errors and blocked 7 times…and in fact one of the key elements who made Nantes’ win was blocking, scoring 12 points compared to the rivals’ 7. Chizoba Neves Atu scored 31 points on the winning side through 50% in attack, 2 blocks and 1 ace.
Luckily for Nantes (now to the top with 23 points), their closest pursuers Chaumont suffered a home defeat against Tourcoing, 2-3 (25:27, 25:20, 25:23, 20:25, 11:15) who followed them with 20 points (with Chaumont at -1 from the leaders). Also better in blocking, scoring 12 points from this element compared to the hosts’8, the winners, who came from two heavy defeats in a row, could count again on their opposite Pablo Koukartsev, top scorer with 23 points with 1 block, 2 aces and 59% in attack.
Victor Cardoso in Chaumont’s jersey ended the game with the same number of points, through 55% and with 2 aces, closely followed by Patrick Indra who added 21, but they weren’t enough to close a game that they were led 2-1 in score.
With the same number of points in the standings of Tourcoing, 20, Montpellier, who today down Poitiers with the score of 3-1 (19:25, 25:23, 27:25, 25:22), showing their dominance in blocking (12 to 3) and led in score by a very good Moritz Reichert, top scorer with 23 points through 57% in attack and 2 aces. Double digit also for Nicolas Le Goff, Dimitar Dimitrov (16 each) and an excellent Danny Demyanenko, who also contributed with 12, 4 winning blocks and 80% in attack (8/10). Metin Toy scored 21 points for the losing side.
Three points also for Paris, who won on the field of newcomers Saint-Jean d’Illac in just three sets (23:25, 18:25, 23:25) with 12 points from Japanese Kento Miyaura (48% in attack and 1 ace) and 10 from an unstoppable Lukas Maase (10/12 in attack, 83%), and Plessis Robinson, who inflicted to Nice the 7th defeat of the season, 1-3 (18:25, 28:30, 27:25, 19:25). The hosts, still without François Rebeyrol, fought, above all in second and third set, but it wasn’t enough. With setter Arturo Iglesias named MVP of the match, the winners were led in score by Samuel Jeanlys, who ended the game with 24 points to his name through 51% in attack and 2 blocks, and were decisive in blocking, scoring 13 points from this element (8 for the hosts). Luis Paolinetti and newcomer Samuele Tuia were the most prolific players for Nice, who remain second-to-last in the standings, with 22 and 19 points, respectively (PHOTOGALLERY OF THE MATCH).
Close the picture the straight sets win of titleholders Tours over a still winless and last-placed Narbonne, 3-0 (25:15, 25:22, 25:16). Better in all elements the winners, after 1 hours and 23 minutes of play, are now at 10th place in the standings after a very weak start.
Round 10 is scheduled already on Tuesday and will feature several interesting clashes, including the big match between Tourcoing and Nantes Rezé, a direct clash between Toulouse and Montpellier, while Saint-Jean d’Illac will face Nice at home, with both sides having 6 points in the standings!
