Suntory Sunbirds stun at the opener of FIVB Men’s Volleyball Club World Championship! Win also for Minas

The FIVB Men’s Volleyball Club World Championship 2023 kicks off in Bengaluru, India, featuring teams from Brazil, Italy, Japan, Türkiye, and the host nation India, in an intense five-day competition.
The six participating teams have been divided into two pools, and the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru hosted the opening matches, with each pool having one match on the first day.

Türkiye’s Halkbank Spor Kulübü and Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds faced off in the inaugural match, marking both teams’ first appearance in the tournament.
Reigning Asian champions achieved a stunning victory and outplayed Türkiye’s giants 0-3 (23:25, 23:25, 16:25) despite their a formidable lineup, including stars Earvin Ngapeth and Nimir Abdel-Aziz in Pool B, setting a strong pace for a semifinal spot.
Cuban player Alain Junior ‘AJ’ De Armas was decisive in the Sunbirds’ success, scoring 15 points.
Following this, India’s Ahmedabad Defenders faced off Brazil’s Itambé Minas in Pool A.
This appearance is historic for the Indian team, which earned its spot through its victory in the 2023 RuPay Prime Volleyball League. Itambé Minas, making a comeback, aims to improve upon their fourth-place finish in the previous year.
Michael Sanchez Bozhulev, a Cuban opposite in the Brazilian team, significantly contributed to Minas’ win, 0-3 (22:25, 23:25, 19:25) too.

The tournament also features giants such as Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro Vôlei, a four-time winner, and Italy’s Sir Sicoma Perugia, the defending champion, and both will start their matches tomorrow, on Thursday.

The pool play in Bengaluru will continue until Friday, leading to the elimination rounds with the top two teams from each pool.
The championship will progress to the semifinals on Saturday, followed by the medal matches on Sunday.
