After the advance played yesterday, in which Nantes down Toulouse in four sets, Round 15 of 2023/24 Marmara Spike League continued today with other 5 games, three of them ended at tie break!
The day started with the 3-1 (21:25, 25:19, 25:18, 25:17) home win of Montpellier over newcomers Saint-Jean d’Illac, who remained last-placed in the current charts with 7 points, -1 from Narbonne (today defeated by Saint Nazaire) and -3 from Nice (defeated at tie break on the field of Poitiers).
After losing first set, the hosts today made the difference in blocking, scoring 11 points from this element compared to the 5 of the rivals, and were led in score by a great Luka Marttila, author of 23 points through an impressive 70% in attack including 3 aces and 1 block. Nicolas Le Goff also contributed with 17, 85% in attack and 6 winning blocks.
After the 1-3 (25:21, 18:25, 21:25, 21:25) victory on the field of Narbonne, and after losing first set too, Saint Nazaire return to the second place at -3 from leaders Chaumont (defeated today at home against titleholders Tours in five sets) and +1 from No.3 Nantes.
Kyle Ensing scored 23 points (54% in attack with 2 aces and 1 block) for the winners, while Helder Mendes Spencer also contributed with 16 with 1 ace, 4 blocks and as many as 92% in attack (11/12 with 1 error).
The other three games ended at tie break.
Paris almost wasted a 0-2 led on the field of Tourcoing, but eventually managed to win the game, 2-3 (20:25, 18:25, 25:17, 25:20, 10:15), despite the hosts’ 14 winning blocks (8 for the winners), but win another remarkable performance from Japanese opposite Kento Miyaura, top scorer of the game with 25 points.
Almost the same story also for Poitiers, who struggled more than expected and had to recover from 1-2 against a combative Nice, who surrendered 25-23 in fourth set and eventually collapsed in fifth set.
Partially it was 25:21, 22:25, 23:25, 25:23 and 15:8.
Metin Toy was decisive with 29 points to his name for Poitiers, now at 8th place in the standings. Nice, led in score by a good Simon Hirsh, who tallied 21 points through 61% in attack, remain at 12th, but earned one very important points for the fight to avoid relegation.
In the game that closed our volleyball Saturday, in a remake of last season final, titleholders Tours continue the winning streak after a disastrous start by winning at tie break on the field of leaders
Chaumont – 2-3 (25:17, 35:37, 22:25, 25:21, 13:15), after 2 hours and 37 minutes of play (47 minutes only the second set)!
For the hosts, Victor Cardoso and Patrick Indra with 27 and 23 points respectively were not enough and, in thrilling game, the winners were better above in blocking (12 to 6) but were surpassed in serving (8 to 3 in favor of Chaumont) and attack (51% to 49%). Without Aboubacar Drame Neto, young Julien Faganas scored 18 points for Tours (50% in attack and 2 blocks), followed by Michael Parkinson and Nicolas Mendez with 14 each (5 winning blocks for the first one), and Alexandre Strehlau, who added 12.
In the game that will close Round 15, Sète will face Plessis Robinson tomorrow at 5pm, local time.
