Regular season of 2023/24 Marmara Spike League is officially over, with all 7 scheduled games valid for Round 26 played on Saturday evening.
Leaders Chaumont suffered a painless defeat on the field of No.7 Saint Nazaire, and the game ended with the score of 3-1 (25:16, 25:22, 19:25, 25:19). The visiting side played without several key players, including starting opposite Patrick Indra, setter Joseph Worsley and Libero Sebastian Closter. As already planned, they’ll face No.8 Paris in Quarterfinals, who today needed just three sets to shut up No.10 Sète 3-0 (26:24, 25:20, 25:14). To make the difference a great performance in blocking for the team from country’s capital, scoring as many as 15 points from this element (5 only for an excellent Lukas Maase, author of 13 points through 73% in attack) compared to the rivals’ only 2!
Behind Chaumont, No.2 Nantes Rezé, despite a 3-2 (23:25, 25:21, 25:20, 22:25, 17:15) on the field of No.5 Montpellier while, at third place, Tourcoing, who easily won against second-to-last Narbonne 3-0 (25:17, 25:19, 25:22) with 10 aces and 16 points from top scorer Pablo Koukartsev.
With the same number of points of Tourcoing, 51, defending champions Tours, that closed regular season at 4th place and today struggled more than expected on the field of relegated Saint Jean D’Illac. However, after dominating first set and suffering the hosts’ comeback in its final points, and dominated second one from start to finish, they eventually managed to close the game with the score of 1-3 (23:25, 19:25, 28:26, 24:26), after other two thrilling sets.
Behind No.5 Montpellier, Toulouse, who celebrated a 3-1 (25:16, 20:25, 25:17, 25:23) home win against No.12 Nice, despite 22 points from top scorer Simon Hirsch (63% in attack with 2 aces and 1 winning blocks), led in score by Alexandre Bouchez (19 points, 1 ace, 1 block and 57% in attack), and Saint Nazaire, at No.7.
Paris closed playoffs’ partecipants at 8th place.
Sète and Plessis Robinson, who today suffered a defeat on the field of Poitiers – 3-1 (25:23, 24:26, 29:27, 25:23), will face each others, together with eliminated from Quarterfinals for a ticket for next edition of Challenge Cup, while season is officially over for Poitiers, Nice, Narbonne, and Saint-Jean d’Illac, who say good bye to Ligue A after just one season with 11 points in the standings and 4 victories.
Quarterfinals best-of-five series will start already on Tuesday while, in the weekend, Nantes will face Montpellier in Gran Finale of Coupe De France in Paris.
