Germany: Berlin Recycling Volleys clinch 6th Ligacup in a row. Friedrichshafen defeated in four sets

2 min read

Berlin Recycling Volleys have kicked off their Volleyball Bundesliga campaign with another victory, winning the 1KOMMA5° Ligacup for the sixth year in a row.
Under the command of head coach Joel Banks, they triumphed with the score of 3-1 (33:31, 16:25, 25:17, 25:17) against VfB Friedrichshafen in the final, hosted by Helios Grizzlys Giesen.
Jake Hanes, last season in Poland’s Cuprum Lubin and now Berlin’s new opposite, was named MVP of the tournament after delivering a stunning performance, including 12 aces across three matches played against Karlsuhe, Lüneburg and Friedrichshafen (5 in final, in which he scored 23 points through 53% in attack).
Friedrichshafen, despite impressive victories over Düren and Giesen to reach the final, couldn’t overcome Berlin’s energy.
In the final, after a hard-fought first set, closed after a decisive winning block from Tobias Krick, 33-31, Friedrichshafen promptly reacted by winning secod set 25-16, taking advantage from several errors from Berlin.
However, the team from country’s capital bounced back and dominated the third and fourth one, with key contributions from Jake Hanes homself and Moritz Reichert, who added 17 points through an impressive 68% in attack and 2 aces. Matt Knigge sealed the victory with the final point, and Berlin now looks ahead to their Bundesliga home opener on September 21st, against Helios Grizzlys Giesen.
