Del Monte® Supercoppa 2024: final is Perugia – Trento! Piacenza and Monza eliminated in semifinals

In Gran Finale of 2024 Del Monte® Supercoppa, italian Supercup, at Florence’s Palazzo Wanny, defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia will face Itas Trentino.
In first semifinal, Perugia defeated a renewed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza with the score of 3-1 (25:22, 23:25, 25:20, 25:21) in a clash between two sides still not at the top of their physical form, even if the winners, after two sets, managed to find the key of the match led by Japanese superstar Yuki Ishikawa and Poland National Team outside hitter Kamil Semeniuk.
On the other side of the net Canadian Stephen Maar, at his debut with the team coached by Andrea Anastasi, top scorer of the match with 18 points, 3 aces, 1 block and 47% in attack wasn’t enough.
Perugia started strong, mostly thanks to several error of Piacenza, taking an early lead, even if the rivals stayed in the game, managing to level the score in the middle ot first set. However, a series of fatal errors (8 only in first set) compromise the set, ended 25-22 with Perugia’s 52% in attack.
In second set the reaction of Piacenza who, after a very balanced start, 9-9, and led by newcomers Stephen Maar (6/6 in attack) and Uros Kovacevic, leveled the score with an eloquent 63% in attack.
An ace from Yuri Romanò sealed the 16-19, while Alessandro Bovolenta, who replaced him, also contributed with 3 points in as many attacks.
1-1, and Perugia suffered their 11 errors.
In third set, Perugia regained the control of the match, with a 5-2 early led. Piacenza, on the other hand, struggled a lot to keep the rythm and collapsed above all in attack, closing the partial with only 39% efficiency, and reception, with only 12%. The winners were able to close the set 25-20, led by Wassim Ben Tara and Kamil Semeniuk (3 e 4), until the decisive fourth set, in which Yuki Ishikawa made the difference.
Although a great Yuri Romanó, who has not given up putting down 6 points through 71% in attack, Perugia always kept the lead with Ishikawa (in starting side in place of Oleh Plotnytskyi starting from second set) who close the set with 6 points and 67% in attack, also decisive for the final 25-20 that is worth another final in row for Perugia.
After beating Vero Volley Monza with the score of 3-0 (25:20, 25:21, 25:23) tomorrow, Sunday September 22, starting from 6pm local time Itas Trentino will face Perugia in Gran Finale.
The team around head coach Fabio Soli canceled a strong start from Monza always keeping the control of the game, despite the injury of Kamil Rychlicki at 11-11 of second set (right ankle) and a very dangerous third set in which they had to recover from 21-23).
Good performance from Riccardo Sbertoli in his first game as captain as well as from Daniele Lavia and Michieletto (30 points in two), while Gabi Garcia, who replaced Rychlicki (for him 7 points through 75% in attack) starting from second set, scored 11 points through also 75% in attack and due aces in just one set and a half.
Monza, on the other hand, suffered the absences, as Osmany Juantorena is still on the bench for at least a month, and missed also middle-blocker Taylor Averill and Coach Eccheli because he was at his son’s wedding, replaced by Antonello Andriani. Also Ivan Zaytsev cannot play, because his registration will be valid only after the third round of Superlega.
