Challenge Cup: 8th Finals started today – Melilla, PAOK, Menen and Lublin take first steps towards next stage

8th Finals of 2024/25 CEV Challenge Cup started today with 4 games.
In Spain, at Pabellon Javier Ortiz Imbroda Melilla, the hosts CV Melilla needed four sets to prevail over Volley Näfels from Switzerland, 3-1 (25:18, 23:25, 25:16, 25:22) with 20 points from Federico Martina (50% in attack and 1 block) and 18 from Gabriel Del Carmine. In addition to a better performance in attack (49% to 37%), double digit also for Victor Mendez (13 points through 73% in attack and 2 blocks) and Daniel Macarro, who added 11.
Mathias Corzo, top scorer of the game, tallied 24 points for Näfels.
Four sets home win also for Poland’s Bogdanka LUK Lublin, who defeated Tourcoing Lille Métropole, currently to the top of French Ligue A, with the score of 3-1 (21:25, 25:18, 25:19, 25:16). Wilfredo Leon scored 15 points for the winners, including 2 blocks, 1 ace and 50% in attack, closely followed by Kewin Sasak, who added 12, and a very good Fynnian Mc Carthy, with 10, including 2 aces, 5 winning blocks and 75% in attack. Pablo Koukartsev, top scorer of the match, recorded 23 points for Tourcoing.
The other two games ended at tie break.
In Hungary, at Tatabányai Multifunkcionális Csarnok, the hosts MÁV Foxconn Székesfehérvár suffered a defeat over most-quoted PAOK Thessaloniki from Greece, 2-3 (25:22, 17:25, 25:15, 21:25, 13:15), who made the difference above all in blocking, scoring 14 points from this element compared to the hosts’8, while Decospan VT Menen from Belgium won at Hristo Botev against the hosts CSKA Sofia with the score of 2-3 (28:26, 27:29, 25:18, 21:25, 10:15), with 20 points from top scorer Gilles Vandecaveye (2 aces, 3 blocks and 52% in attack) and 6 winning blocks from Arno Van De Velde. Denislav Bardarov and Strahinja Brzakovic scored 24 points for the Bulgarians, but they were not enough.
