Coppa Italia: Civitanova down Trento at tie break and join Verona to Final!
2 min read
Cucine Lube Civitanova is officially back in the Coppa Italia final for the first time in three years, securing a dramatic 2-3 (26:24, 24:26, 14:25, 25:22, 13:15) win in second semifinal win over European champions Itas Trentino at the Unipol Arena in Bologna.
After a nail-biting match that lasted 2 hours and 13 minutes, the players around head coach Giampaolo Medei came out on top in front of nearly 8,000 spectators in what was their 12th appearance in the Coppa Italia final, where they’ll chase their 8th national title!
The key to Civitanova’s success was their powerful blocking game, finishing with 10 blocks against Trentino’s 7, as well as lot of decisive block touches, but they also kept solid reception and crucial attacking moments when needed. Eric Loeppky and Adis Lagumdzija made the difference, both scoring 18 points, while Mattia Bottolo also contributed with 16. Interestingly, for the winners middle blockers, personal milestones were reached with Barthlemy Chinenyeze, who surpassed 1,500 career points in Italy (9 today), and Giovanni Gargiulo, who topped 1,000 career points.
For Trentino, Lavia led the charge with 16 points, with four teammates contributing in double digits: Alessandro Michieletto with 15, middle blockers Bela Bartha and Flavio with 13 each, while Gabi Garcia added 11.
Civitanova will return to action on Sunday, January 26, starting at 15:15 local time for the final against Rana Verona, who eliminated super favorite and defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia in first semifinal!
It will be the first Coppa Italia meeting between the two teams after their 2024 Playoff 5th Place Final clash, won by Civitanova with the score of 3-1.
