After parting ways with the Slovenian Volleyball Federation, Gheorghe Crețu has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Serbia’s men’s senior volleyball team.
56-year-old Romanian coach, who currently coaches Poland’s Skra Bełchatów expressed his excitement: “It’s a great honor to coach Serbia, a country with a rich sports tradition. This opportunity is very special, not only for me but for any coach in the world,” he said.
The decision follows his recent departure from Slovenia, that he lead the national team to a bronze medal at the 2023 European Championship and secured their first-ever qualification for the Paris Olympics, and his move to Serbia ends weeks of speculation, solidifying his position as one of the most prominent coaches in European volleyball.
His plans include gradually introduce younger players into the Serbian roster, blending fresh talent with the experience of seasoned veterans.
“Together with the more experienced players, we’ll find the right path forward. I know this is a big challenge, but that’s exactly why I accepted it,” he added.
