6 min read

2025 Volleyball Nations League first week has been completed on Sunday following an intense five days of exciting games.
On Wednesday in Quebec, Canada, Italy and Argentina had a perfect start earned first three points for their standings. The first one celebrated a 1-3 (16:25, 25:22, 19:25, 19:25) win over Bulgaria, while Argentina stun France by beating them with the dame result, 3-1 (25:22, 13:25, 25:22, 25:19). In the evening, Canada won against Germany at tie break, 2-3 (25:23, 19:25, 25:21, 23:25, 11:15).
In Rio De Janeiro, all three winners earned three points, starting from Ukraine, who celebrated an unexpected 3-0 (25:22, 25:20, 25:23) win over USA, just like Pool 2 hosts Brazil who dominated Iran also in straight sets, 3-0 (25:19, 25:16, 25:18) and, in the evening, Slovenia down Cuba by 3-1 (25:22, 21:25, 25:18, 25:15).
In Pool 3 in Xi’an, China, Poland started their campaing with a 3-1 (25:22, 22:25, 25:22, 25:22) success over The Netherlands, the hosts China suffered a 0-3 (23:25, 14:25, 22:25) defeat against super favorite Japan while Serbia won against TĂŒrkiye by 3-1 (12:25, 25:22, 25:23, 25:23).
However, on Thursday, China had double the reason to celebrate: a dominant 3-0 sweep over Serbia and the 56th birthday of head coach Vital Heynen.
The home team delivered their first VNL win since returning to the tournament, with Ji Daoshuai and Jiang Chuan leading the charge.

“I didn’t ask for a win, just a good game,” said Vital Heynen. “We can be proud.”

Serbia couldn’t match China’s composure and efficiency, with Drazen Luburic and Marko Ivovic once again led Serbia in scoring, but unforced errors proved costly.
On the same Pool, Poland celebrated a 3-1 (27:25, 25:22, 18:25, 39:37) great win over Japan.
In Pool 1 in Canada, after a 2-0 lead, Germany suffered Italy’s comeback losing
the game with the score of 2-3 (25:21, 25:20, 19:25, 23:25, 11:15), while Argentina down Canada with the same result, 3-2 (25:22, 21:25, 14:25, 25:22, 15:8). In Brazil, also on Thursday, both games ended at tie break too: Cuba won against Brazil, 2-3 (25:21, 24:26, 25:21, 25:20, 13:15), while USA down Iran 3-2 (19:25, 21:25, 25:21, 25:23, 17:15).
On Friday, in Canada, Bulgaria sweep Argentina 3-0 (25:21, 25:20, 28:26), while France inflicted first defeat to Italy winning the game in four sets, 3-1 (25:18, 25:22, 19:25, 26:24), also beating Canada on Saturday, 2-3 (22:25, 27:29, 29:27, 25:21, 6:15). However, they suffered their first defeat on Sunday against a great Germany, who collapsed a day after against Bulgaria 3-2 (25:22, 22:25, 25:19, 23:25, 15:12).
On the same Pool, close the picture a 1-3 (23:25, 25:17, 35:37, 21:25) win of Italy over Argentina, while Canada down Bulgaria in straight sets, 0-3 (24:26, 23:25, 19:25).
Other electric matchups from across the globe lit up the competition, with Ukraine continuing their dream debut, and Slovenia emerging victorious in a tight thriller against Iran.
At the Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro, Ukraine once again stunned fans by toppling Cuba in a back-and-forth five-set duel. The 3-2 win (25:22, 20:25, 25:20, 17:25, 15:12) marked the VNL rookies’ second consecutive victory.
Vasyl Tupchii powered the attack with 18 points, while Dmytro Yanchuk and Illia Kovalov added 17 each.
After trading set wins, Ukraine held strong in the tie-break, fending off a Cuban comeback fueled by Marlon Yant, who tallied 23 points.

“This is an unbelievable start for us,” said Ukraine’s Yevhenii Kisiliuk. “We gave it all in the tie-break — our dream is alive, and we’re showing we belong here.”

In another edge-of-your-seat contest, Slovenia narrowly defeated Iran 2-3 (25:17, 23:25, 18:25, 25:18, 12:15), pulling off their second victory in Rio despite lineup changes.
With key starters resting, the spotlight fell on superstar Nik Mujanović, who collected 30 points including four blocks and three aces. In the fifth set, he, along with Ćœiga Ć tern, helped tip the scale in Slovenia’s favor.
Despite losing the first set, Slovenia rebounded quickly and never lost composure, securing the tie-break 15-12 and maintaining their unbeaten streak.
Japan delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Netherlands 3-0 (25:18, 25:23, 25:18) in their final match of the opening week of VNL.
Japan now holds a 3-1 record with 9 points, while the Netherlands drops to 1-3.
Kento Miyaura led the charge with 14 points including two crucial service aces during a late third-set comeback, while rising star Keihan Takahashi, just 21, sealed the match with the winning spike.

“We’re happy with our results. It’s been a great experience for the younger players,” said Miyaura after the match.

Dutch outside hitter Bennie Tuinstra led his team with 13 attack points and remained positive despite the loss, citing the squad’s growth and effort.
Also in Pool 3, TĂŒrkiye sweep China 0-3 (22:25, 21:25, 20:25), just like undefeated leaders Poland who down Serbia also 3-0 (25:21, 25:20, 25:23).
