Germany stay on top and Romania strengthen their position in Cluj-Napoca

Germany remain to the top of Pool D at CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men, while hosts Romania added another important victory to their campaign on a day that saw both matches at BT Arena end with a 3–1 scoreline.

Germany opened the action in Cluj-Napoca with a 3–1 victory over Switzerland (25:19, 25:17, 22:25, 25:21), maintaining their position at the top of the standings.
Switzerland managed to claim the third set, but Germany ultimately held their nerve to secure another important win in the pool.
The result keeps Germany in first place with 11 points, ahead of France on nine. Romania follow in third with seven points, while Latvia and Türkiye are both on three. Switzerland remain without a point.
Tobias Brand led the charge with an impressive 25 points through 60% in attack and 4 of his team’s 10 aces, while Erik Röhrs also contributed with 17. Étienne Schalch top-scorer Switzerland with 22 points, all in attack, through 52%.

The numbers underline how Switzerland managed to make the second half of the match far more competitive. Germany finished with a 50% attacking efficiency and 11 blocks, compared with Switzerland’s 45% and seven. Switzerland’s Etienne Schalch led his team with 22 points, while Lars Migge added 11.

“For us, it was really important to win this one set today and to play so well against such a strong opponent, especially after two matches that didn’t go as we had hoped. I also got into the game well today and I’m very happy with my performance,” said Etienne Schalch after the game.

Later in the evening, Romania delighted the home crowd at BT Arena by defeating Türkiye 3–1 (25:19, 25:21, 20:25, 25::18).
The hosts established control early in the match, taking the opening two sets and moving within one set of victory. Türkiye responded in the third, reducing the deficit and briefly raising the possibility of a comeback. Romania, however, regained their composure in the fourth set and closed out the match to collect another valuable three points.
The victory keeps Romania firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stage, while Türkiye will need a strong response in their remaining matches.
Thus Romania book their place in the knockout stage in front of 3,875 home fans.
Romania’s serving played an important role in disrupting Türkiye’s rhythm, while their attack operated at 58% across the match. Alexandru Rață led the winners with 22 points, while Cristian-Daniel Chițigoi added 16.

The evening also came with praise for Cluj-Napoca and the Romanian hosts from the CEV President Roko Sikirić, who highlighted the return of EuroVolley to the city after it previously staged the women’s competition in 2021.

“We are very glad, happy and thankful to be here, and to the national federation, the city and the government for welcoming us,” he said. “The organisation is at a very high standard. Most importantly, the teams are giving compliments, and I can witness myself that it is really perfect.”

With the pool reaching its decisive stages, Germany continue to set the pace, France remain within striking distance, and Romania are building momentum at home. The battle for the top four promises to remain open until the final matches in Cluj-Napoca.
