3 min read

After losing against Russia, Turkey have scored the first victory at the European Championship, outplaying North Macedonia in straight sets 25:20, 25:23, 25:13.

Selcuk Keskin – setter and team captain (TUR)
Today we played better, step by step. Yesterday we lost with Russia but today we came back and the result 3-0 is really good. On Sunday we will play against Slovenia. they are a very good team, but we are getting better. We want to win on Sunday and I believe our team can do it.”

Dogukan Ulu – middle-blocker (TUR)
North Macedonia are a good team, but we fought better than them and we won. Our focus was really good today. We look forward to the next match against the home team. We still need to improve our serve. If we serve better it will be easier for us to win.”

Aleksandar Ljaftov – outside-spiker (MKD)
In the first two sets we were really close to the opponent. I think that the main reason for our defeat was our lack of experience and patience. After all, this is our first European Championship. We’ve had two chances already and what follows is to enjoy the tournament and I hope that we will perform better in the next matches.”

Vlado Milev – outside-spiker (MKD)
It was a tough game. In the key moments our concentration failed and that showed in the final result.”

Russia, who needed four sets to win against Belarus, started the match with a pretty different line-up comparing to yesterday’s match against Turkey, keeping only Ivan Iakovliev and Egor Kliuka in the starting six. Belarus delivered a solid performance with a few point lead in the second part of the set. However, Russia titans managed to recover and, of course, emerging victorious. Dmitry Musersky and Victor Poletaev scored 16 points each for the winners, while Pavel Kuklinski and Artur Udrys scored 11 each for Belarus.

Siarhei Busel – middle-blocker and team captain (BLR)
Russian team is very strong but today we managed to steal a set, as they made many mistakes in the first one. Our reception was better today but most importantly today`s game was a very good training for us before the remaining matches in our pool. Tomorrow we have a day off, and then we face Finland when we will have to deliver our best volleyball.

Radzivon Miskevich – opposite (BLR)
Yesterday there was more pressure because it was the opening match and the arena was full of Slovenian fans. Today our reception was better. We played relaxed. They are the European Champions, we just played how we wanted. They had more pressure on tem because they had to win.”
