CEV Cup: Barkom eliminate PAOK, Modena dominate in rematch vs. Olympiacos and all results of 1/16 finals

Barkom-Kazhany Lviv made a true upset in the rematch of the 16th finals of the 2020 CEV Volleyball Cup against PAOK Thessaloniki: Ukrainian champions beat all the odds and eliminated Greek vice-champions from the CEV Cup. After losing the first leg at home in four sets, Barkom’s chances of advancing to the eighth-finals were rather poor knowing they had to bounce back at one of the most difficult away grounds in Europe. However, led by Yuriy Tyumin, author of 25 points, the team coached by Latvian Uģis Krastiņš swept PAOK in the rematch in straight sets and then finished them off in the Golden Set! Dutch Kay van Dijk scored 17 points for PAOK.
Reactions:
Konstantinos Delikostas, head coach of PAOK Thessaloniki: “Our opponents were very good at their reception and side-out tonight. Apparently, they did not have any stress this time and played much better. We did not find a solution in order to score consecutive points at any moment of the game. We only had our chance in the Golden Set, at 14-13, but we could not take it. We know that we do not have a high scoring percentage and we usually win thanks to our break points, this did not happen tonight and our rivals got the victory.”
Ugis Krastins, head coach of Barkom-Kazhany Lviv: “We did not think about the result, our main focus was to improve our own game. In the first leg we made tactical mistakes, we made mistakes in simple situations and we struggled with the side-out as well. We improved these elements tonight and in addition to that, we were braver in our game. We played better than last week and we managed to qualify to the next round.”
One more team found its way to the 1/8 finals through the Golden Set: this is Galatasaray HDI İstanbul from Turkey, that squandered a 3-1 victory over the Czech Dukla Liberec from the first leg and lost in straight sets in the rematch. Nevertheless, Galatasaray claimed the Golden set by a 15:11 and went to the next round!
Leo Shoes Modena from Italy prevailed against Greek champions Olympiacos Piraeus. After being on a verge of defeat in the first match, Modena downed rivals in straight sets in the rematch.
