Despite being highly weakened, Italian side Leo Shoes Modena swept the French of GFC Ajaccio in the first leg of the 2020 CEV Volleyball Cup quarterfinals.
Modena arrived in Corsica for the first match of the 2020 CEV Cup quarterfinals without their best scorer Ivan Zaytsev and American Matthew Anderson but it didn’t prevent them to achieve a straight-set victory against the rivals: 3-0 (28:26, 25:21, 25:22).
The Pole Bartosz Bednorz was Modena’s top scorer with 13 points, while the player that replaced Anderson in the lineup, the 18-year old Tommaso Rinaldi made 94% reception (16 digs, 19% excellent). Montenegrin Aleksandar Milivojević scored 10 points for Ajaccio and made 88% reception (16 digs, 13% excellent).
In the all-Turkish clash, Galatasaray HDI İstanbul beat Arkas İzmir in four sets, while Lokomotiv Novosibirsk from Russia gave no chance to Belgian Lindemans Aalst (3-0). Rematches of all three face-offs are scheduled for March 4.
