Trefl Gdańsk startled VERVA Warszawa ORLEN Paliwa in Round 23 of the 2019/20 Polish Plusliga regular season.
They caused a great sensation and defeated vice-leaders at home in straight sets, partially 25:23, 26:24, 25:19.
With the win, Gdańsk secured a place in the playoffs, while the team from the Polish capital made a big step back in the fight for the top spot in the regular season as they now have two points less than the leaders Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle (61:59).
It was quite an emotional night at the Ergo Arena. As many as four former members of Trefl Gdańsk came with Warszawa to the match. Of course, a person mostly adored by Trefl’s fans is the head coach Andrea Anastasi who spent five seasons with the club. Others are players Piotr Nowakowski, Patryk Niemiec and Michał Kozłowskim.
Bartosz Filipiak was the top scorer for the winners with 22 points, while Belarussian Artur Udrys poured in 17 points on the other side.
