Kazan: Verbov no longer head coach of Zenit-Kazan, Alekno back on the bench?

1 min read

Aleksey Verbov is no longer a head coach of Zenit-Kazan, the Russian volleyball club announced.
After a season in which the only positive result was the victory of the National Cup, Alexey Verbov leaves Zenit Kazan and will continue his coaching career in another team. In his place Vladimir Alekno will return on the bench of the Russian titans?
Verbov spent seven seasons as a libero in Zenit (winning numerous trophies including CEV Champions League and FIVB Club World Championship) and had a chance to occasionally be the playing coach in the last of those seasons. In 2019/20, Verbov took the role of the head coach of the club, replacing legendary expert Vladimir Alekno who became a consultant for health reasons.
Verbov commanded Zenit to win the trophy in the Russian Cup but failed to lead them to the Playoffs of the CEV Champions League, which has never happened to the Kazan side in the club history. Prior to the suspension of the championship due to coronavirus pandemic, Zenit took the second position in the standings of the regular season.
