#Euro2021 Qualifiers: Latvia will play at the continental championship after 26 years, Spain will wait for other pools
The Latvia volleyball National team will be playing the CEV European Championship first time in 26 years!
They destroys the hosts Cyprus in the last round of the Pool D qualifying tournament for the 2021 CEV EuroVolley in Nicosia: 3-0 (25:15, 25:21, 25:23). Thus, they secured a spot for the final stage of the continental championship for the first time since 1995. Actually, that appearance of this Baltic country was its only appearance in the tournament ever. Atvars Ozoliņš was Latvia’s top scorer today with 15 points, while Toms Švāns added 4 winning blocks.
“We really want to savour this moment, since the last time Latvia qualified for the European Championship was in 1995,” said Latvian star player Hermans Egleskalns. “It is a great success for us and for our country as a whole, but I have to admit that we had come to Cyprus to achieve this result. We knew that the match with Cyprus would be a tough one since we watched their game with Spain but we prepared very well and in the end we succeeded in securing another victory.”
Latvia finished the qualifier in the Cypriot capital with the same win-loss record as Spain, that today beats Moldova in straight sets, of 4-2. Despite losing to Spain in both encounters in the pool, Latvia qualified for EuroVolley thanks to a better set ratio (2.3 vs. 1.4). However, it’s not all over for Spain when it comes to progressing to the continental championship. They will have to wait for the other six pools to end in mid-January to see if they are among the best five runners-up that will qualify along with the pool winners….
“This victory primarily results from our good performance from the service line as well as at the net, namely with our blocks,” said Spanish player Miguel Angel Fornes. “We took many points with our blocks. We have been working on this, studying the opponents through videos. Now we wait and hope that this result is enough for us to qualify for EuroVolley.”
