Italy: Perugia wins big match of Round 20. Victory also for Milano, Trento, Civitanova, Piacenza and Monza

5 min read

In the first match of the day, valid for Italian Superlega Credem Banca Round 20 (or, if you prefer, Round 9 of second-leg) Powervolley Milano (without middle-blocker Piano) does his homework correctly and wins in four sets against Kioene Padova, who loses his setter Shoji in the third set due to a hand injury. After the great performance against Modena last Thursday, the team of coach Piazza keeps the expectations and takes home the second victory in a row after 6 consecutive defeats. Another great test in blocking: just like against Modena, even today the overall blocks are 16 (4 by Maar). Good performance by opposite Patry too, named MVP of the match with 20 points, 64% in attack on 25 balls, a block and 3 aces. Bottolo was certainly the most incisive on the other side of the net, especially in the second set when he put down 8 balls (the final scoreboard says 17 points in total).

In the other matches of Round 20, with Lucarelli named MVP of the match (13 points) and his team flying from the service line with 12 aces and 7 team blocks, Itas Trentino “avenged” the knockout of the first leg against Tonno Callipo Vibo Valentia (without De Falco), that of the controversy for the lack of setters for Covid19, and take the fifteenth consecutive victory (12 in Superlega) with a clear 0-3. Itas Trentino secured, at least, 3rd place for the playoffs, having chances to even reach the second depending on Lube’s results in the last two rounds. Dutchman Nimir Abdel-Aziz with 15 points, including 6 aces was the top scorer of the match while Serbian Marko Podraščanin also contributed with 4 blocks.
As expected, no problem for Cucine Lube Civitanova who destroys the last-placed Top Volley Cisterna in straight sets, with the hosts having fought only in the third set but always chasing their opponents. There were 17 errors in the service of Top Volley, with three aces and five blocks, while the winners made 7 aces and 6 blocks, claiming the sixth victory in as many games disputed in the new year. Osmany Juantorean scored 16 points, while Cuban Robertlandy Simón set up 4 blocks. For Lube these are three very important points to concretely set the first place in the standings on the plate in the direct clash with Perugia that will be played at Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche on Wednesday 3 February, immediately after the weekend of the final four of the Italian Cup.

In the big match of Round 20, Sir Safety Conad Perugia extends its positive mini streak (this is in fact the third victory in a row), confirms the first place in the standings keeping at +3 from Lube and celebrates a deserved victory on the field of Leo Shoes Modena, author of probably the worst performance of the last four games (three consecutive defeats).
The first figure that stands out in the match report is in blocking: 0 Modena, 11 Perugia, with the home team failed to stop the attack of the opponents even once, including Leon, author of an amazing performance with 27 points, 63% in attack, 3 blocks and 1 ace. For Modena only one player in double digit, opposite Luca Vettori, the best among the hosts with 18 points and 52% in attack.

The victories of Piacenza and Monza close the curtain on Round 20. Gas Sales Piacenza won at home in four sets over NBV Verona and, with this success, they climb to 32 points in the charts, just two points from Vibo Valentia, while Verona remains in ninth place with 22 points. A hard-fought match in which Piacenza scored 8 aces and did well in attack, with Russell top scorer of the match with 22 points, followed by Clevenot with 15 points and Mousavi, elected MVP by journalists with 13 points and 75% in attack. Vero Volley Monza, on the other hand, won in four sets on the field of Consar Ravenna and targets the fourth place of Vibo Valentia, now only one point away.
