VNL 2021: Brazil and Poland dominate France and Slovenia and fly to Grand Finale

5 min read

The Brazil National Team dominated France and secured the first ticket in tomorrow’s grand finale of the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League in Rimini (Italy).

Brazil convincingly defeat France in the first semifinal of the competition, and advanced to its first-ever gold medal encounter in the tournament. The winners dominated the rival, winning by 3-0 (25:20, 25:18, 25:19). Brazil changed their play compared to the match against France in the preliminary stage, however, in the opening set, at 18:13, Isac Santos got injured and never came back to play. France suffered from a bad day in offense of its main star Earvin Ngapeth, today author of only 5 points, 4/16 and 25% efficiency. Yoandy Leal scored was the top scorer of the match with 20 points, while Maurรญcio Souza set up 5 blocks.
Jean Patry put down 12 points for France.

Jean Patry (France): “I think that Brazil played very, very well today. We didn’t have good mentality to play this game. We lost a lot of simple points. We are disappointed, because it was not a good game for us, not a game which we expected. We were bad in defence and it was a key part of the game in my opinion. We have to find our shape and a proper attitude ahead of tomorrow’s match. It’s really hard to play for 3rd place. We have to restart and open the game better tomorrow. We have to find more energy. We have to talk together and try to win tomorrow.

Yoandy Leal (Brazil): “Our team was very concentrated on this match. We lost to France during the preliminary round, but today it was a great match of our entire team. Tomorrow we play for gold. The concentration of our team was the most important to play the game like this one. We served very well, we attacked very well and we put a lot of pressure on France. No matter if we will play against Poland or Slovenia, we have to be prepared and fully focused on our team and our preparation.

Now, Brazil will face the winner of the other semifinal, Poland, who defeated Slovenia with the same result: 3-0 (25:22, 25:21, 25:23)
Also Poland will make a debut in the title clash just like its rival in the final.
Slovenia showed to be fatal to Poland in the last few years.
Actually, out of the last five head-to-head encounters prior to the one today (CEV European Championships in 2015, 2017, and 2019, the Olympic qualifications for Tokyo, and the preliminary stage of ongoing VNL!).
Today, Bartosz Kurek was absolutely the best on the winning side making 74% effectiveness after the two first sets (15 points), finishing the match with the game-high 17 points, while Fabian Drzyzga set up 4 winning blocks. Tine Urnaut made 13 points on the other side of the net.

Klemen Cebulj (Slovenia): “They served very well, they had a very good block-defence all the time, so it was difficult for us to play. They won this game, because they played very well. We expected that they could play like this, they showed a big quality today and our game was not enough to win this match. We need to forget today, for sure we will think a little bit about it, but tomorrow in the morning we have a game against France for 3rd place and it’s very important for us. We have to prepare for this game and play tomorrow for victory.

Michal Kubiak (Poland): “We are happy that we won this game. That’s it for today. We are focusing on tomorrow’s game, which is the final. Keeping everybody in rhythm and playing from the beginning until the end focused and trying to fight for every ball. There was no additional motivation, we always try to win against everybody and we go on the court with the same mentality, trying to play as good as we can and today we showed that even playing not really good we can win.”
