Tokyo 2020: First day of Olympic Games! All results

4 min read

Winning debut for Italy, which made its first match in the Tokyo Olympic Games with a painful 5-set victory over Canada.
Italy was close to experiencing an upset already at the start of the 2020 Olympic menโ€™s volleyball tournament in Tokyo. In disadvantage 2-0, and 4 points behind in the third set, Blengini’s team recovered thanks to the performance of Alessandro Michieletto, together with veterans Juantorena and Colaci. For him, an excellent 24-point game (including the final one, with a diagonal attack). Osmany Juantorena addedd 20, while Gianluca Galassi set up 4 blocks and Nicholas Hoag scored 17 for Canada.

In the first match in Pool B, the defending champion Brazil celebrated Renan Dal Zotto’s return to the bench in an official match with a clear 3-0 win (25:22 25:20 25:15) over Tunisia. The head coach, who in recent months has fought a difficult battle with covid-19 appeared in good condition.
His team found some difficulties in the first two sets, despite the initial advantages of the Africans. Then he dominated the third. Dal Zotto send the starting team onto the field, but in the second set he replaced Leal, inserting Douglas and keeping him on the pitch until the end of the match. Wallace de Souza top-scored Brazil with 11 points, the same as Wassim Ben Tara put down on the other side of the net.

On the same Pool, Russia, who performs at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games under the name Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) due to the punishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for tampering with drug-testing data a few years back, was successful in its first against Argentina, emerging victorious in four sets, 3-1 (21:25 25:23 25:17 25:21), leaving the feeling of an unfinished performance. The same Argentina that always starts strong, but then collect far too little. Faced with a not excellent Russia, the South Americans had the reins of the game for more than a partial, but then they stopped and lost the game. Too generous a Mikhailov who, even with the passing of the years, remains a top level player, while Volkov and Kliuka have fully done their duty.
Maksim Mikhaylov was the top scorer for the winners with 17 points, while Ivan Iakovlev added 4 blocks. Bruno Lima made 18 points for Argentina.

Back to Pool A, easy victory for the hosts of Japan over Venezuela. Nakagaichi’s sextet imposed itself with a clear 3-0 (25:21 25:20 25:15) showing an excellent Ishikawa, as demonstrated by the 15 balls placed on the ground in only 3 partials, and a Nishida still not at the top. For Japan, this was a winning start in the Olympics for the first time in 29 years, i.e. since the 1992 Barcelona Games.
In any case, there is nothing to blame for Venezuela, which had already won their Olympic Games by winning an unexpected qualification.

On the same Pool Poland, one of the main favorites, already stumbled upon the obstacle.
Iran surpassed the world champion in a nerve-racking duel that was resolved in the tie-break, which posed a culmination of drama.
When the lineups were announced, there was a big surprise: Poland started without their captain Michaล‚ Kubiak. Furthermore, the player who had his share of quarrels against Iranian players over the past few years did not enter the game at all. As for the tie-break, Poland saved as many as 7 match points, missing to convert one for themselves to win.
Amir Ghafour was the most prolific player for a promising start of Iran in the Olympics, scoring 19 points, while Seyed Mousavi made 4 blocks. Wilfredo Leรณn notched 23 points for Poland and Piotr Nowakowski set up 4 blocks.

In the last match of the Day, in Pool B, USA destroys France in straight sets, partially it was 25:18, 25:18, 25:22.
Most expected an intense match between the United States and France at the conclusion of Day 1, but the former had something else on its mind as the U.S. National Team proved much stronger than the rivals. Americans dominated all segments during the three sets, hardly missed anything, and made a one-sided game, and thus France fell after less than one and a half hours of a duel.
Taylor Sander top-scored the winning side with 15 points, and there were no players in double digits in France, whilst its main stars Earvin Ngapeth and Stรฉphane Boyer underperformed, having 18.7% and 25% attacking efficiency, respectively.
