The winner of the Pool B Italy, reached the semi-finals after they easily defeated an unrecognizable Germany in straight sets (25:13, 25:18, 25:19).
Thus far, Italy made an exceptional and absolutely unexpected result given they came to the tournament with a group of players that has been practically formed just before EuroVolley: seven consecutive victories (without defeats) and only 2 lost sets.
Italy always maintained a high concentration throughout the match to return to the top four in Europe after six years and for the 15th time in history.
Everything went downhill to Germany today, and its defeat came largely due to the fact that György Grozer left the court in the first set, put an ice bag on his knee, and never returned. Alessandro Michieletto top-scored the winners with 13 points, while Moritz Karlitzek made 11 on the losing side.
Also the 10 winning blocks (against only 2 of Germany) made the difference.
Giulio Pinali, Italian opposite: “Today we played very well. We had a strong serve, great attacks and also good reception. It was probably our best match of the tournament. I hope we will play like this in the semi-finals. This was our last appearance in Ostrava and I have to say I really enjoyed it. After Covid pause it was so cool to see people back in their seats.”
Moritz Karlitzek, Germany spiker: “We knew that they had a height advantage so basically we couldn’t get into the game. We were unable to put a much-needed pressure on them with our serve. It is hard to play against Italy like that. They were good in every gaming activity and served perfectly. We missed György Grozer. He had a knee problem yesterday and no-one knew what it was. He wanted to give it a go but it didn’t work. He is an amazing player and his experiences would definitely help us.”
After defeating the hosts Czech Republic in straight sets, and after a fiery third set, Slovenia is the last team to book a ticket for EuroVolley semifinals, where they’ll face Poland on Saturday in Katowice.
Partially it was 21:25, 19:25 and 25:27.
Slovenia take revenge on the rival in the best possible way for the defeat in the group stage.
Alberto Giuliani’s side showed an excellent performance against the high-flying Czechs, who had previously eliminated the Olympic champion France in the Round of 16, and made it to the semis in the continental championship for the third time in six years.
The victory of the silver medalist from the last edition of the competion was the most beautiful gift for the 35th birthday of its setter, Dejan Vinčić.
Tonček Štern was the most prolific playet for Slovenia with 19 points, while Jani Kovačič had 82% reception (17 digs, 82% excellent). Jan Galabov scored 13 points on the losing side.
