Waldviertel defeats Graz at tie break in Mevza League Opener

2 min read

Yesterday evening Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel needed 124 minutes to defeat UVC Holding Graz on the road in the opener of the Mevza League 2021-2022. Austria’s defending champions suffered a disappointing five-sets defeat (23:25, 18:25, 25:23, 25:20, 10:15) against last season’s Final Four hosts.

Congratulations to my team. Both sides have shown what they are made of,” said Waldviertel’s coach Zdenek Smejkal, satisfied with the performance of his team.
Graz manager Frederick Laure: “We saw another thriller between these two teams. We certainly have not reached our full potential yet, but it was a good step in that direction. Now it is time to rest and focus on the Champions League match next Wednesday in Slovakia against Rieker UJS Komarno.”
Two more national derbies are scheduled today and tomorrow, in which the Slovakian side TJ Spartak Myjava will be hosting VKP Bratislava, and OK Calcit Kamnik from Slovenia will be facing last season’s runners-up OK Merkur Maribor.

All partecipants are: UVC Holding GRAZ (AUT), SK Zadruga AICH/DOB (AUT), Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT), HAOK Mladost ZAGREB (CRO), OK Merkur MARIBOR (SLO), Calcit Volley KAMNIK (SLO), OK ACH Volley LJUBLJANA (SLO), TJ Spartak MYJAVA (SVK), VKP BRATISLAVA (SVK).
These teams initially compete in a double round robin format. After the end of these main rounds, there will be Final Four, and hosts will be announced later this year.
