Poland: Bełchatów drop victory over European champions ZAKSA, who remain undefeat! Win also for Radom and Gdansk

3 min read

Other three matches of Polish championship were played on Saturday.
The big match of PlusLiga, valid for the fifth round of the 2021/22 season between PGE Skra Bełchatów snd Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle went in the favor of the latter, the European Champions.
After a difficult match with Jastrzębski Węgiel (1-3) a week ago, Bełchatów faced another challenging match on Saturday. In their home court, they played against the winners of the CEV Champions League from the previous season, ZAKSA. And, even though they have a significant lead in the head-to-head encounters, the rivals proved much stronger in recent years – and this time too. The Bełchatów side dropped the lead of 2-0 in sets so ZAKSA remained undefeated in the league.

It was not enough for the hosts to win the first 2 partials and go up from 19-21 to 22-21 in the third, then overturned by Huber’s ace on Ebadipour (22-23) and by Kaczmarek’s block on the same Ebadipour (23-25). In the fourth set ZAKSA was always ahead in the scoring, and in the fifth they decided with an ace by Janusz (3-5) and a counterattack from Kaczmarek (5-8). Skra tried to come back with a block by Klos (8-9) and a counterattack by Atanasijevic (10-11) but Huber’s ace scored 10-13. Skra again at -1 with Klos’s block on Sliwka (12-13), but Sliwka himself closed the games in counterattack at the first match ball (12-15). At the team level, Skra did better in serving (12 aces and 14 errors, against 9 aces and 23 errors), but was outclassed in blocking (5 vs. 19) and in attack (44% and 22% efficiency, vs. 53% and 42% efficiency).
Łukasz Kaczmarek was the top scorer for the winners, with 29 points, 63% in attack, 53% efficiency and four blocks, while Kamil Semeniuk served four aces.

In the second match Trefl Gdansk (with Sasak MVP, on the field in place of Wlazly) defeated Stal Nysa 3-0 (with a bad evening by Ben Tara, finished on the bench) while in the evening second victory in a row for Czarni Radom, who surprisingly won 3-1 on the field of Slepsk Malow Suwalki (still without Tuaniga) who paid for the 30 errors in serving.
The other news of the day is that Katowice has not obtained the postponement of the match against Olsztyn and so they will have to play without 5 players!
