Champions League: Italian duo Trentino and Lube and Dinamo Moscow too one step from quarterfinals

5 min read

Last three matches of 2021/22 CEV Volleyball Champions League Round 4 were playes today.
The two Italian sides Trentino Itas and Cucine Lube Civitanova both took another step, the big one, towards the qualification to quarter-finals.

Dinamo Moscow also reached the 4th victory from the same number of games played. Russia’s titleholders didn’t tremble even for a moment in the match against Belgium’s VC Greenyard Maaseik in POOL B, to take over the leadership from Ziraat Bankası Ankara.
In fact the winners were better in all elements, above all in blocking, 13:3 and in serving, 7:1, as well as in attack, 56% vs. 31%, and in reception (53% positive and 16% perfect for the winners, 36% and 12% on the other side).
After Ilya Vlasov’s injury the middle blockers in Dinamo became Dmitriy Zhuk and Maxim Belogortsev, while Yaroslav Podlesnykh was named MVP of the game with 13 points.

Konstantin Bryanskiy, head coach of Dinamo Moscow: “At the start of the game Greenyard played well in the defense, so we had some it the part of first set. Thanks to service we achieved the win, at then dominated in all components.

Joel Banks, head coach of VC Greenyard Maaseik: “There is no shame to lose this game. Dynamo had a roster with players with huge quality and experience. Their players took a part in the Olympic Games, won the Champions League, Russian and Italy Championships. Today we played well, but Dynamo was much better..

Yaroslav Podlesnykh, outside hitter of Dinamo Moscow: “It wasn’t the easy win. Both team played well. Greenyard showed good skills in defense, it surprised us. We demonstrated a good service, it was a big part of our play. We had an informative analytics about Greenyard players and we knew their main skills. We don’t think about quarterfinal and prepare for other two games in the Pool B.

Elias Thys, opposite of VC Greenyard Maaseik: “First of all, Dynamo is very strong team. It’s always difficult to play against blue-whites. We take a huge spirit and energy to win one set, but the opponent was better. We had three home games and we try to show good volleyball and win.

Cucine Lube Civitanova made no errors and earned a full set of points against Slovenia’s OK Merkur Maribor, achieving the 4th success in as many games in POOL C.
Thus the italian defending champions consolidated their leadership in the pool, putting one foot in the quarter-finals.

Marlon Yant, Cucine Lube Civitanova: “I’m very happy both about our approach to the game and for the final win. This confirms our first position in the Pool now. We still have two games – for sure, they will be the tough ones, so we must remain focused, because in the end, maybe the small details will make the difference when it comes to the qualification to quarterfinals“.

Gabri Garcia, Opposite of Cucine Lube Civitanova: “Every game, every point, is a big step towards qualification to the next round, and for the tournament in general. This win tonight is like a booster of confidence for us, for our next two games, and we hope to go and win them. We are meeting next our strongest opponents in the Pool, but we also have a lot of talent. This is my first season in Italy, it’s quite different from the USA. It was hard for me in the beginning, but with the help of my teammates, the transition was smooth.

Trentino Itas are getting closer to qualifying for the quarter-finals of the competition.
In their probably most important clash in the competition thus far, the Italian side has swept Turkey’s Fenerbahçe HDI İstanbul in POOL E. Trentino have never given the hosts a chance to become dangerous and eliminated them from the battle for the playoffs.
Now the Trento-based club will play against their countrymen Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia in the next round for the first place in the pool and possible direct qualification to the next stage.
Alessandro Michieletto top-scored the winning side with 15 points, including 4 blocks (100% of success in attack and 5 points in first set!), but setter Riccardo Sbertoli was named MVP of the match.
But what made the real difference between these two sides was the net domination: 3 winning blocks for Fenerbahçe, 20 (!!!) for the winners!

We are happy with both the performance and the final result, because we know that the eventual qualification for the quarterfinals was also based on this match. We’ll obviously have to play our part in Cannes too if we want to continue to have a chance, then obviously it won’t just depend on us. However, I believe that we’re doing what we promised ourselves and we must continue on this path; once again the team has shown that they want to continue in the right way this season,” said Angelo Lorenzetti, head coach of Trentino Itas.
