The PlusLiga titleholders Jastrzębski Węgiel achieved a great victory over Italy’s Cucine Lube Civitanova in the first leg of the 2022 CEV Volleyball Champions League quarter-finals.
And they did it in an away match: 0-3 (22:25, 23:25, 19:25).
Thus, we’re halfway to seeing the Polish semi-final in the competition, as Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle won the face-off against Dinamo Moscow by a forfeit.
It was a match between two teams that had problems with injuries: in Jastrzębski, Ukrainian Yuriy Gladyr was missing from the starting lineup as he returned to his homeland following the war that started there, while the Frenchman Stéphen Boyer has had enough strength to play only as a substitute.
On the other hand, the team from Italy was without Osmany Juantorena and Jiří Kovář. Cuban Marlon Yant was fielded even though he’s injured too, while Ivan Zaytsev played only one set from the start to the end.
The Czech Jan Hadrava was MVP and top scorer of the match with 14 points and 59% in attack, the same number of his teammate Tomasz Fornal (60%), as well as Simon for Lube, author of 2 aces and 3 blocks.
“Lube is a great team, and it’s hard to play here. We played very good, we delivered a good collective performance. I am happy to come back here and to win against my former team. Of course, I wish them the best, but after this phase of the competition. I hope that in the away match, we will play as well as today,” said Jan Hadrava.
Gianlorenzo Blengini, Head coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova: “I don’t think it was a question of approach, I think rather that we are in objective difficulty, especially in reception, and when reception does not work properly everything becomes more difficult. This is for sure a heavy defeat, but qualification is still open, as our team has the capacity to recover what we lost tonight, and reach the qualification. We have to believe it“.
