Champions League: ZAKSA first finalist!

2 min read

Thanks to the clear straight sets win in first leg, Grupa Azoty Kędzierzyn-Koźle ZAKSA needed only two sets to eliminate fellow countrymen of Jastrzebski Wegiel (with Dryja and Gladyr sick, and Clevenot due a knee injury).
And they did it: with 8 aces (!!!), ZAKSA easily win first set with a clear 25-15, and take also the second, 25-21, with an attack domination (64% vs. 41%).

To retain a chance for the first-ever promotion to the Champions League final, today, Jastrzębski had to win 3-0 or 3-1 and win the Golden Set. Considering the absences, it was a very difficult task and, after the domination of Gheorghe Crețu’s guys in the first 2 sets, the Romanian expert employed backups, just like his colleague on the other side, Andrea Gardini, resulting in the ZAKSA 3-2 win the end.
Thus, the Kędzierzyn-Koźle club defeat, currently, the biggest rival in Poland 3 times in one week, twice in the Champions League and once in PlusLiga!
Wojciech Żaliński top-scored the winning side with 15 points, including the one that closed the match (76% attack, 13/17), while Aleksander Śliwka served 4 aces. Łukasz Kaczmarek, who played only in the first two sets scoring 11 points with 64% in attack, was named MVP.

ZAKSA advanced to the Super Finals for the second consecutive year, in which, just like the last edition, will face Italian side Trentino Itas, who defeated fellow countrymen at golden set in second semifinal.

Łukasz Kaczmarek, MVP and opposite of Grupa Azoty Kędzierzyn Koźle: “I knew that after winning the first set easily, we would have to play carefully in the second part. Halfway through the set, I felt that today is our day and we are going to the final.

Benjamin Toniutti, captain and setter of Jastrzębski Węgiel: “I wish Zaksa good luck in the final, today we did not manage to repay them, who performed brilliantly in the first two sets of the encounter. I will not complain, but our health problems did have indeed an impact on our attitude in matches with my former team. I hope we will be ready for a revenge in the fight for the Polish Championship“.
