VNL 2022: after cancellation of China – France, Italy destroys Germany in Pool 3

After cancellation of China – France for COVID, that was first game scheduled today (3 points for France due forfait), in second match of Pool 3 in Quezon City, Philippines, Italy literally destroy Germany with a clear straight sets win (partially 16:25, 21:25, 22:25).
Italy earned its fourth consecutive victory of VNL, and despite a blackout in the middle phase of the third set, when they had 17-9 but still risked that the rivals would prolong the match which they had dominated until then, it was a clear triumph for European champions.
Yuri Romanò was the most prolific player for Italy with 13 points, while Gianluca Galassi and Simone Anzani recorded 4 blocks each.
German opposite Linus Weber was the match’s top scorer with 14 points, all of which were produced in attack.

“It was important to start the week by winning, especially after such a long trip,” italian captain and setter Simone Gianelli said. “I’m happy that we managed to play well, but we can do better and that’s what we’ll focus on for the next matches. Germany are a very good team and they played really well. Any time we play them, it’s a difficult match.”
