VNL 2022: The Netherlands and Japan opened Pool 3 in the Philippines in a victorious way

4 min read

One match (for now) of the second week of the 2022 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League has been canceled due to COVID-19.
Not a good start for POOL 3 of Quezon City, Philippines.
It all started with a few COVID-19 cases in the Thailand Women’s National Team in Week 2, and then continued with the infections of a head coach of the Italy Men’s National Team, De Giorgi, and his assistant Caponeri (both were quarantined in Ottawa, Canada, before returning back home).
And both coaches are out also for Week 2.
And now came the information that the game that was to feature France and China and has been canceled due to several cases of corona within the Asian team.
The FIVB awarded the win to Olympic champions 3-0 by a forfeit.

But two matches were played as planned today.
Basically, Netherlands beats decimated Slovenia first time in 7 years while, supported by Philippine crowd, Japan downs Argentina to take the temporarily lead in the competition!
The second week of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Nations League started with the win of the Netherlands over Slovenia, one of the best teams in Europe at the moment.
For the winners, this was their third success in the competition, and this time it came with a straight sets win (17:25, 21:25, 24:26). The team of head coach Roberto Piazza played probably the best game of the year while Slovenia, on the other hand, were heavily penalized, as they remained without covid-infected opposite Tonček Štern and libero Jani Kovačič the night before the match. In addition to these two players, the side commanded by Mark Lebedew came to the Philippines without several important players, including Čebulj, Gasparini and Šket, while captain Tine Urnaut didn’t enter the field. Interestingly, The Netherlands broke the cospicuos series of defeats against these rivals, which began in the quarter-finals of the 2015 CEV European Championship!
Nimir Abdel-Aziz top-scored once again the winning side with 18 points.

On the other game, about players who make the difference, Yuji Nishida was inspired again (25
points!) this time in front of a large crowd in Quezon City, who openly supported his team, to lead Japan to their fourth win in five matches and to the top of the Volleyball Nations League 2022 standings! In the 3-1 victory over Argentina (27:25, 25:18, 17:25, and 25:16), the Asian side was great from the service line, delivering 9 aces compared to one of the rivals. The South American-based Olympic bronze medalists in Tokyo 2020 now have a 1-4 win-loss record.

It was a very tough game, with many quality players on the court. Mentally, our only focus was on the win and we played a good match. We went through different situations, but, step by step, we showed some good-quality Japanese-style volleyball and made it to a great victory,” said Yuji Nishida, opposite of Japan.
