VNL 2022: three points for Argentina, France (3-0 over Brazil!) and Japan

3 min read

In first match of the day in Pool 5 in Osaka, Japan, Argentina overcame Australia earlier to keep their hopes of competing in the Bologna Finals alive. The South Americans overcame a set deficit to win 3-1 (21:25, 25:23, 25:19, 25:15) and move up to the 10th spot in the current standings with records of 4-6 and 14 points.
Opposite Bruno Lima was the top scorer among the winners with 19 points. The defeat dropped Australia to last place on the standings (1-10 and 2). Their final chance to avoid relegation is against France on Sunday, and a win there would only assist them if Bulgaria lost both of their remaining games.

Following a 3-0 (25:21, 25:22, 25:21) win over the defending champions Brazil, France reclaimed temporarily the top spot in the volleyball Nations League 2022 standings.
The reigning Olympic champions have an 8-2 win-loss record while,
on the othet hand, with a record of 7-4 and 21 points, Brazil is sixth in the standings. They are one of the six teams who have already qualified for the Final Round in Bologna, which will take place from July 20 to 24.
Despite the fact that France controlled all aspects of the scoring, there was enough of amazing serving on both sides of the net to enthrall the crowd and gain crucial break chances in the match. Brazilians were outscored by the French by 11 straight aces to 5.
Six French players ended the game with aces, including Jean Patry, who added three of those to his 19-point game total. The team led by Coach Andrea Giani also had a strong attack success rate of 60% to defeat their great rivals, who made life tough for them by making very few unforced errors (just nine in the game!).

“It was a tough game, even if we won 3-0. Brazil are always a tough opponent,” said Yacine Louati after the match. “We played our game and we were consistent. We are happy to win and have our eighth victory in the VNL. We have to be prepared to play against anybody (at the Finals). The tournament we’ve had so far has been kind of surprising and the ranking is still impossible to know. So we just have to play, keep going and we’ll see who we’ll play against.”

Brazil’s last match in Japan is against the hosts on Sunday while, in their two remaining matches in Osaka, France will meet Argentina on Saturday and Australia on Sunday.

Close the picture a four sets win of hosts Japan over Canada (25:20, 25:16, 22:25, 25:20). Led by Ishikawa and Nishida, the Pool hosts secured their eight win in the competition.
