Italy: Superlega is back!Padova down Modena at tie-break to stage an upset, Lube better than Taranto

The new season of SuperLega officially kicked off today!
In first match, Gioiella Prisma Taranto hosted the three-time defending champions Cucine Lube Civitanova. The match was played at a high level and the visiting side prevailed, but it was far from an easy job for them. Partially it was 23:25, 23:25 and 21:25.
For the hosts, Antonov (14 points and 50% in attack) and Stefani (13 points and 57%) were not enough, and not even the support of the almost 1200 home fans.
With 10 points, Ivan Zaytsev top-scored the winners, but all elements went in favor of Lube: 5 aces, 49% in attack, 8 winning blocks, 60% positive reception and 34% perfect.
The second game of the new season in the 2022/23 SuperLega Credem Banca saw the first surprising result.
The first marathon match of the competition was won by Pallavolo Padova, who knocked out Valsa Group Modena at the tie-break (25:22, 16:25, 25:17, 23:25, 15:11) in a match with 65 errors!
Thus, one of the major favorites to the title experienced a bitter start to the national championship, losing in the first outing of this new season. Looking at numbers, balance in reception and attack: 47% and 46% of the hosts, against 48% and 43% for Modena, who made 25 errors from the service line (yes, a whole set!), despite 8 aces (3 from Bruno and Rinaldi). 17 errors for Padova, but with only 3 aces. However the hosts were super in blocking, with 14 points from this element (6 from Crosato) against the only 3 of Modena.
Serbian opposite, DuÅ”an PetkoviÄ was the top scorer of the match with 27 points and 52% in attack, but MVP award to Japanese star Ran Takahashi, author of 17 points, 57% in attack (with 100% and 6 points in fourth set). The Frenchman, Earvin Ngapeth, was Modenaās top scorer with 20 points.
