Turkey: Fenerbahçe win third tie-break in row, Ziraat learn their lesson on how to defeat newcomers and the others of Round 3
3 min read
Round 3 of 2022/23 AXA Sigorta Efeler Ligi has been played today with first six matches (on Monday postponement between Halkbank and Spor Toto).
Fenerbahçe, the bronze medalists from last season, played their third tie-break in as many games, and won them all!
Develi Belediyespor, the newcomers to the national top division, did their best to repeat an upset from Round 2 when they swept the reigning champions Ziraat Bankkart, but failed to convert the lead in sets of 2-1 into the victory. However, 4 points from matches against the top 3 teams from last season, as they played against Halkbank in the opener, can be considered an excellent result for the Kayseri side! Vahit Emre Savaş top-scored for the winners with 17 points, including 6 blocks, while the Pole Michał Filip scored 24 points including 4 aces for Develi.
Partially it was 25:17, 22:25, 22:25, 25:19 and 15:13.
Ziraat learned their lesson from a duel with the same Develi and, this time, they didn’t underestimate another newcomer to the Efeler Ligi. In fact the Ankara side swept Türşad in straight sets (30:28, 25:14, 25:22), led by Dutchman Wouter ter Maat, who scored 13 pointa and 5 blocks from Bedirhan Bülbül. The Pole, Mateusz Mika, scored 12 points on the losing side.
Interestingly enough, however, the Efeler Ligi newcomers this year were a hard nut to crack for two more clubs that are considered among the title favorites this season! Hekimoğlu Global Connect Travel Bursa Voleybol İhtisas, led by the Canadian opposite Bradley Gunter author of 24 points and Russian middle blocker Aleksey Nalobin (7 blocks), forced a tie-break with Arkas Spor, but ultimately they collapsed (25:27, 25:23, 25:22, 21:25, 10:15). Mirza Lagumdžija scored 26 points including 4 blocks on the winning side, while Burutay Subaşı served 5 aces. Caner Dengin had 73% reception (15 digs, 60% perfect).
Hatay Büyükşehir Belediyesi, for which the Belarusian Radzivon Miskevich scored 23 points and Cafer Kirkit made 6 blocks, took the lead in sets of 2-1 against Galatasaray HDI Sigorta but their rivals made a comeback and then prevailed 2-3 (20:25, 26:24, 25:23, 17:25, 13:15).
The Iranian Morteza Sharifi (76% reception; 25 digs, 1 error, 36% perfect) and the Australian bomber Thomas Edgar scored 20 points each for the winners, while Selçuk Keskin had 5 blocks.
Bursa Büyüksehir Belediye Spor needed four sets to prevail on the field of Cizre (25:16, 22:25, 23:25, 23:25), while Altekma defeat Tokat BLD Plevne with the same result (25:20, 25:18, 22:25, 25:24) in front of their home fans.
