Polish Super Cup: Jastrzębski down ZAKSA in 5 sets to collect their second title in a row in competition

After catching up with their rival’s lead in sets twice, Jastrzębski Węgiel prevailed over Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle to win their second AL-KO Superpuchar Polski, Polish Volleyball Super Cup, in a row.
After over two and a half hours of great volleyball in front of nearly 4,000 spectators at the Hala Globus in Lublin, Marcelo Méndez’s team defeated ZAKSA at tie-break (24:26, 25:23, 18:25, 25:20, 15:13).
Last season, ZAKSA won all possible trophies, both domestically and in Europe, except one, the Super Cup, which they lost exactly to the same rivals, Jastrzębski.
And history, at this moment, repeated also this season.
Before the match, the team from Jastrzębie-Zdrój, the Polish vice-champions, started the PlusLiga season with a perfect collection of victories in the first five rounds and it was them who seemed to be the favorites in the match for the Super Cup against the team that had already suffered two defeats so far.
But, defeat apart, there’s another bad news for ZAKSA as, in the middle of the tie-break, their setter (the Poland National Team setter) Marcin Janusz twisted his ankle joint and didn’t come back until the end of the match.
Frenchman Stéphen Boyer top-scored the winners with 22 points, while Ukrainian-Polish Jurij Gladyr made 6 winning blocks.
Łukasz Kaczmarek put down 23 points on the losing side, while Wojciech Żaliński made 5 blocks.
