Turkey: Fenerbahçe down former leaders Ziraat in four sets! And the others of Round 12

2022/23 AXA Sigorta Efeler Ligi – regular season Round 12 has been completed today with a couple of upsets.

Hatay B. Sehir Bld, currently at No.10 of the standings, defeat a so far very good Bursa Büyüksehir Belediye Spor at tie break (21:25, 25:16, 13:25, 25:19, 15:11) who lose third place as their direct pursuers, Arkas Spor, beat Spor Toto in straight sets (25:20, 25:19, 25:20).
Tie break also between Hekimoglu Global Connect Travel BVI and Develi Bld. (24:26, 25:16, 25:23, 18:25, 16:14), with the hosts able to close the decisive fifth set overtime.
The real upset of the day, however, is another: former leaders Ziraat Bankkart Ankara (now second behind Halkbank, who yesterday trampled over Cizre) fall at home against a so far disappointing Fenerbahçe HDI Sigorta (now at No.6) by 1-3 (21:25, 25:19, 20:25, 17:25).
Thus Fenerbahçe put end to Ziraat’s 9-game winning streak to win their first big match this season!
The reigning champions Ziraat Bankkart entered the game with a huge winning streak on their account. But the rivals managed to emerge victorious from the first duel against any of the title favorites, the group to which they were supposed to belong according to predictions but their current rank in the standings doesn’t portray it. Losing to Galatasaray HDI Sigorta, Arkas Spor, and Halkbank left the impression that Fenerbahçe have some problems this season. However, today, they broke the curse against the vice-leaders (leaders prior to the match) of the competition.
Kaan Gürbüz scored 27 points for Fenerbahçe, including 5 blocks, while Dutchman Wouter ter Maat tallied 15 points for Ziraat.
